As I step into the role of WIRES President for 2025, I am both honored and energized by the opportunity to help lead WIRES at such a pivotal time for our industry. My career has been deeply rooted in regulatory policy, and I have seen firsthand how crucial electric transmission infrastructure is to our nation’s economic growth, reliability and energy future. Today, as we are confronting new challenges and opportunities in our industry, I am excited to work to advance WIRES’ mission and continue advocating for the vital role of transmission infrastructure.
The electric grid is facing an unprecedented transformation. The growth of large loads from high-demand industries driven by artificial intelligence (AI), has shifted the paradigm of what many once saw as a historically flat nationwide load profile. These emerging technologies and industries are no longer just a glimpse into the future — they are here today, reshaping energy demand in ways we are only beginning to fully understand. Coupled with this, resource adequacy concerns are rapidly materializing, putting pressure on our grid to deliver reliable power in the face of evolving generation mixes, extreme weather events and shifting demand patterns.
The convergence of these factors highlights the criticality of robust, reliable and modernized transmission infrastructure to ensure power can move from where it’s generated to where it’s needed, while maintaining reliability 24/7, 365 days a year under a variety of scenarios and weather conditions. It’s widely acknowledged that significant investments in transmission infrastructure are needed to meet growing demand and address these resource adequacy challenges. WIRES members are uniquely positioned to lead in meeting these demands. Together, we have the expertise, resources and collaborative spirit to develop and implement innovative solutions that enable cost-effective delivery of reliable power, drive economic growth and support national and state policy goals.
It’s also important to recognize that transmission infrastructure is not just about delivering electricity. It’s also a cornerstone of our national security and energy independence. As global events have demonstrated, a secure and resilient grid is vital to our nation’s economic stability and safety. Building and maintaining a robust transmission network helps to insulate us from disruptions and positions the United States as a leader in energy innovation.
As we begin this new year, I look forward to working with all WIRES members to continue the important work of educating and advocating for the critical role of transmission infrastructure in meeting our changing energy demands. I am eager to engage with policymakers, industry stakeholders and all those invested in our energy future to ensure that transmission remains a priority in the conversation about how we achieve reliability, sustainability, economic prosperity and national security.
We have an exciting year ahead. With continued dedication, WIRES will remain a leading voice in shaping the future of transmission and the electric grid. I am honored to represent such a remarkable group of professionals, and I am excited to help lead WIRES’ efforts in 2025.
