Greetings!
The Maine State Bar Association supports funding for civil legal aid. We testified this year in support of the budgetary request to ensure baseline funding. Without it, the justice gap will grow and too many Mainers across the state will be without legal representation.
Would you be willing to join us and take these three simple steps?
1. Take Action Here: Send a letter to your state legislators.
2. Join us at Access to Justice Day at the State House on March 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m..
3. Share this message with your colleagues, family and friends.
Here is why your support is crucial this year:
Last year, the Legislature made a one-time $3 million investment in civil legal aid. This year, lawmakers can make that investment ongoing baseline funding in the supplemental budget, which would provide stability for these essential services.
The proposal has already received strong support in the Legislature, including approval by the Judiciary Committee, but the budget process is not yet complete, so we need your support. This funding helps ensure that low-income Mainers facing serious legal problems can get the help they need. Despite Maine’s strong network of nonprofit civil legal aid providers, the system remains significantly underfunded and thousands of people with urgent legal needs go without help every year.
About Access to Justice Day:
Advocates, lawyers, judges, and community members will also gather in Augusta to highlight the importance of civil legal aid.
