ABOUT THE MOVIE: Rent is a 2005 American musical drama film directed by Chris Columbus. It is an adaptation of Jonathan Larson's 1996 Broadway musical of the same name, in turn based on the 1896 opera La bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, which is itself based on the 1851 novel Scenes of Bohemian Life by Henri Murger. The film, which features six of the eight original Broadway cast members reprising their lead roles, depicts the lives of several bohemians and their struggles with sexuality, drugs, paying their rent, and life under the shadow of AIDS in the gritty East Village of New York City from 1989 to 1990.

Join us for a movie and crafts afternoon at TAG - The Actors' Group, located in The Shops at Dole Cannery (photo left), 650 Iwilei Road, Suite 101, Honolulu, HI 96817. Park either in the parking lot on the Costco side of the building, or, in the Dole Cannery theater parking garage (we will validate). Price is dependent on the number attending ($15 to $20 is what we've paid in the past).. Payments accepted in cash or via Venmo.

AWhat Is WatchCraft Hawaii?

Inspired by a video that founder Kristen Nemoto Jay saw on Instagram, WatchCraft Hawaii is an event where participants gather to do their individual craft work while watching a movie. As it occurs at TAG - The Actors' Group, the movie is actually projected atop the theater's stage walls. In other words, four images screened against four walls. It's a unique way of watching your favorite movie. Also unique is the pricing structure. All Kristen cares about is to pay the rental fee that is owed to TAG. Therefore, if at least 20 people attend, the ticket price will be $15. If more attend, the prices will lowered. All in all, it is a terrific way for people to relax and wind down, and yes wine by donation will be available. So have you got the idea? Crafts + Movies = WatchCraft Hawaii! And listen, if you're not into crafts, you can just come and watch the movie. All good. But if you ARE a crafts addict like some of us, please feel free to bring your own crafts project to do while we watch the movie. Crafts such as crocheting, knitting, jewelry making, painting, you name it! Some have also used this time to work on letters they'd like to write or even some last minute work emails. While we invite everyone to do any activity that brings them joy, if you are going to use your phone or computer, please sit in the back or side rows so that we don't distract others around us. This is actually a time for us to unplug and unwind so whatever you need to do to get there, please do. Just be mindful that some will be there simply to relax and watch the movie.
