Update on Court Case Challenging Missouri’s Pro-life Protections of Women and Pre-born Babies

A trial began on January 12th and is ongoing in the Circuit Court in Jackson County In which Planned Parenthood is seeking a final order from the Judge declaring all of Missouri’s common-sense health and safety abortion regulations to be unconstitutional under the 2024 Amendment 3. Attorney General Catherine Hanaway and Jay Sekulow’s ACLJ legal team are vigorously defending those pro-life laws.

We will update you as soon as the Judge rules in that case.

We ask for your prayers for God’s courage and strength for the attorneys defending our laws as well as God’s guidance, wisdom and judgment for the Judge presiding over the case.

Below is an analysis from Liberty Link, send out earlier this week, with a video of Mary J. Browning, J.D., with the Justice Foundation. Browning is giving an update on the first week of the hearings which began on January 12th.

Legislative Update

The House and Senate are wasting no time in moving bills to Committees. This week the Senate heard SB 1032, Senator Mike Moon is the sponsor, that would authorize a taxpayer to claim a $2,400 exemption during the tax year in which a taxpayer gives birth to a child. This would help a family with the costs of carrying their baby to childbirth. Missouri Right to Life supports this legislation.

Another important pro-life bill heard this past week was the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act”. This legislation would ensure the same protections for a baby born alive after an attempted abortion as any other child born through the natural birthing process alive. This legislation is important because a baby born alive after an abortion attempt where a document has been signed authorizing the abortion is in greater danger of not receiving medical care. We saw this situation in Virginia and New York a few years ago and we do not want this happening in Missouri. The law needs to be specific that these babies born alive after an abortion attempt will be specifically protected and that there will be a penalty for not giving them care.

House sponsors for these bills are: Rep. Brian Seitz, HB 1667 and Rep. Holly Jones, HB 2294. The House bills are scheduled to be voted out of committee on Tuesday, January 27th. While the House held hearings this week on these bills in the House Children & Families Committee, Senators Brad Hudson and Rick Brattin have similar bills in the Senate. Senator Brad Hudson’s “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” legislation is SB 999 and Senator Rick Brattin’s bill is SB 1221.

Continue to pray for the House and Senate as the legislative session progresses. The Senate Democrats are filibustering and nothing is moving in the Senate at this time.

Follow the weekly lifelines to get updates on pro-life legislation moving through the session.

Be sure and mark your calendars to attend “Show-Me Life Action Day” on Wednesday, March 11 at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. Lobbying your legislator begins at 10:00 a.m. with a rally at Noon on the first floor rotunda featuring Abortion Survivor, Melissa Ohden as our Key Note Speaker.

March for Life

President Donald Trump addressed participants of the 53rd annual March for Life in D.C.:

"In 2026, as we celebrate 250 years since our founding fathers recognized the right to life in our Declaration of Independence, I want to thank every single one of you who was out on this winter day," he said.

Vice President JD Vance condemned abortion and celebrated the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision as he addressed tens of thousands at the rally on the National Mall.

“The March For Life… is about whether we remain a civilization under God or we return to the paganism that dominated the past. The far left in this country tells our young people that marriage and children are obstacles… We know it’s a lie,” he said.

Students and parents from Immaculate Conception Parish, Jefferson City, MO, attend the March for Life.
