Zero Waste Meeting on Tuesday

Join us this Tuesday, September 30, at the Marge Williams Center, 221 Winslow Way West, from 5-6:30, with a Zoom option (but much more fun and practical in person).

Here's the agenda:

  • Find out what ZW is doing and how you can take part
  • Ask questions: Can I recycle this? (Show us what you've got)
  • Bring examples of items that help you prevent waste through reduction, reuse or repurposing
  • Meet the founders of BI Flashdrive (see related article at bottom of this newsletter)

Revised!

"It's Not Garbage" Poster

In the last issue of the ZW newsletter, we revisited the official recycling poster from Bainbridge Disposal/Kitsap County you see to the left. (Print a copy here.)

We also introduced a supplemental poster Zero Waste recently created that highlights alternative destinations for some of the items listed in the "Garbage" section in the poster above. Because of your feedback, this poster has been revised. See below and print out the new version here.

Car Seat Recycling

Drop off your old car seat at Target for recycling between September 21-October 4. If you choose, you can receive a 20% discount on a new car seat, stroller or certain baby gear.

Or, if your car seat meets the specifications of Bremerton's KidVantage, consider donating it for reuse to this nonprofit beginning November 1.

Reuse Postings on Facebook...

Gina Moyes Weibel posted on Bainbridge Freely Given about an annual Hallowe'en tradition she began: trick-or-treating at the "plushy" house.

Simply clean out your children's gently loved stuffies and rehome them by DM'ing her for her address in North Town Woods and dropping them off on her porch.

Then come trick-or-treating on the 31st to pick up something new to love for another year!

More Clothing Reuse

KiDiMu

KiDiMu will once again be running its annual children's costume swap. Drop-off will start on October 2 and be available anytime the lobby is open. Then starting October 16, anyone can come to pick out a new-to-your-child outfit for the holiday during KiDiMu open hours.

ReFashion Bainbridge

Start setting aside good quality clothing for the next ReFashion Bainbridge clothing swap on November 9 (drop-off only on November 8).

All the details can be found on the ReFashion Bainbridge events page.

Event Recaps

 BI Beach Cleanup

Over 120 islanders participated in the 10th annual Bainbridge Island Beach Cleanup. Participants went out on their own to a shoreline of their choosing and picked up everything from old tires to a single flip flop to oyster netting. And how did a coconut end up here?!?

As an adjunct project to the cleanup this year, local artist Peter Sprung invited the community to his studio to create sculptures from the beach detritus.

Peter shared, "We had a very good turnout...about 20 people. I have a lot more ArtCycling ingredients in my studio. Folks are invited to come over and continue our efforts to turn what appears merely to be beach detritus into works of art that are both thought-provoking and fun to make.”

He added that, “We plan to produce enough art to create a show that will travel around Bainbridge Island. We need everyone’s help — especially our young people — to heighten public awareness of the problem of plastics and other forms of marine pollution on the Island. We want to highlight the promise of sustainability and recycling that this year’s clean-up embodied, and the valuable contributions that art-makers can make.”

Fix-it Fair

BARN, Sustainable Bainbridge and the many volunteer fixers presented another successful Fix-it Fair on September 20. Most of the 60+ items brought in, including lamps, textiles, vacuums and jewelry, were successfully repaired. We'll host another fair in March.

If you missed this one, Kitsap Solid Waste is hosting its last repair event of the year at the Sylvan Way Regional Library on Saturday, October 11, 11am-2:00pm. More info here.

BI Flashdrive

We love promoting local reuse efforts, and this focused monthly doorstep collection is one of them.

On September 27, in just under two hours, BI Flashdrive picked up from Bainbridge residents...

  • 7 tents
  • 13 sleep mats
  • 3 camp chairs
  • 2 sleeping bags
  • 1 cot
  • 1 camp stove
  • 6 bins of miscellaneous camping gear
  • 15 blankets
  • 1 big bin of hand and feet warmers

... and delivered all items to the Northwest Hospitality folks and our homeless neighbors they serve.
