Birthday Celebration for Bob Abrams

Join us after worship on July 22 in Henry Young Fellowship Hall to celebrate our dear Bob Abrams' 102nd birthday with cake and ice cream with toppings.

Highlights of the June 25, 2025, Session Meeting

Among other actions, the Session:

  • Affirmed Pastor Tami’s work with Spectrum to make changes that will save the church $100/month for internet service, plus providing a free additional phone line to be used by the pastor.
  • Affirmed Pastor Tami’s work with the Leake family to plan a memorial service for Julie Leake at the church August 30.
  • Approved the treasurer’s report and financials for May; authorized treasurer Aaron Baer to send a mid-year pledge status report to members.
  • Heard an update on sending checks and letters of thanks to the mission workers CHPC has supported; approved sending the funds allocated for Jeff and Christi Boyd to a PC(USA) account for “Ministry to Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children of Congo,” as requested by the Boyds.
  • Heard an update on the nursery, which will be available if needed beginning July 6.
  • Elected Eva Stimson and Ben Langley to be commissioners to a called meeting of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery July 14.
  • Approved a recommendation from the NOW Committee that CHPC’s 40 percent of Pentecost Offering receipts be given to Cedar Ridge Camp.
  • Approved CHPC’s hosting of a lunch-and-learn or evening event for Hunter and Ruth Farrell to talk about their recent trip to Palestine. The event will be planned by the Middle East Prayer Group.
  • Approved spending $5,000 of funds budgeted for earth care to have solar panels installed through a grant from Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light.

No Committees and Community Meal in July

The OPS and NOW Committees are taking a break and not meeting in July. Please mark your calendar for the next community meal and OPS/NOW meetings on Wednesday, August 13, at 6 p.m.

This group is one that received a grant from Jefferson County Master Gardeners Association. All are welcome to come!

Choir Practice

Choir Practice will resume this Thursday, July 3rd, at 6:45 p.m.

Healing the Earth
Members of the CHPC community are invited to donate to an exciting art project that will be a visible witness to our commitment to earth care and ending gun violence. The Session has agreed to contract with local blacksmith Craig Kaviar to create a six-foot iron sculpture for the front plaza. The art piece, called “Healing the Earth,” will be made of pieces of guns chopped up at Guns to Gardens Louisville safe-surrender events.
The cost of this project is $28,514, plus stand, lighting, and installation. Session has set aside $10,000, plus $548 from the Peace and Global Witness Offering, toward the art piece. The remainder of the cost will be covered by grants and donations. If you would like to donate, please make your check out to CHPC and specify in the memo line that the donation is for the sculpture. Or you can use the QR code below.
If you have a tool or other item that you would like to donate for possible use in the sculpture, please contact the church office. Please make sure the object is iron (attracts a magnet). There is now a container in the narthex to put any iron tools in.
Guns to Gardens Louisville, which grew out of a Sunday school class in our congregation, has so far received 88 unwanted guns to transform into garden tools, art, and jewelry. Craig Kaviar is a valued partner in this effort. His art piece—along with the gardens flourishing on church grounds—will symbolize to the community our commitment to healing and caring for God's creation.

Nursery Will Open This Sunday, July 6

Thanks be to God for willing volunteers to open our nursery. It is clean and fully stocked and will be available for babies and children up to age 5 who need it, beginning this Sunday, July 6. Just as Jesus welcomed the children, we want all the little ones in our midst to feel loved and welcomed in our congregation.

This Sunday, the nursery volunteers will be Claudia Foulkes and Soni Castleberry. Every Sunday there will be two adults available, both of whom have passed CHPC’s required background check performed by Protect My Ministry, a vendor recommended by Mid-Kentucky Presbytery.

Nursery volunteers will be in the narthex each Sunday morning by 10:45 a.m. to greet children and their families and offer their services. If not needed at the beginning of the service, volunteers will sit at the back of the sanctuary and can be approached at any time during the service to take children to the nursery as parents and children wish.

A special thank you to Claudia Foulkes and Katherine Futrell for stepping up as Nursery Co-coordinators to schedule volunteers and ensure appropriate readiness of the nursery. Please contact them through their information in the church directory if you would like to be a part of this CHPC ministry. A big thank you also to Eva Stimson and Perry Chang who updated guidelines and forms for the operation of the nursery.

Prayer and Action for Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.
