Filling a Need with Love

By Fran Booth

Since 2010, Scully Learning Center Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, has been serving Cave Creek, Carefree, North Scottsdale and surrounding areas, by enriching the lives of developmental and physical disabled adults. Located in Cave Creek and serving Carefree, North Scottsdale and surrounding areas, Scully provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to explore the world, find purpose and live meaningful lives.

Headquartered in Cave Creek, Scully volunteers proudly serve adults with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and intellectual delays. The organization provides activities allowing them to safely explore and enjoy their community.

For over a decade, Scully Learning Center Foundation has been a leader in the field of developmental disability support. For example, in their organic garden, participants learn to cultivate crops with hands-on composting, planting, weeding and harvesting. Their goats, chickens and ducks add to the experience. A variety of arts and crafts classes allow participants to choose their own media and progress at their own level and experience. Scully Learning Center Foundation also offers cooking and nutrition classes.

Scully plans numerous field trips with the intention of providing socialization and enrichment opportunities. Participants have seen movies and shows, hiked, visited interesting venues in Maricopa County. They’ve celebrated the holidays together through one-on-one time and enjoyed the many amenities in our community.

Some of Scully’s amenities include:

Garden: Created by members, for members. Participants tending to the property garden with help from community experts is especially rewarding, educational and delicious.

Art Studio: Artistic creativity is always encouraged at Scully Learning Center through a full ceramic studio to painting, drawing and arts and crafts,

Farm Animals: Scully’s property is home to several furry and feathered friends. Being able to play with, feed and pet the animals always brings a smile to members’ faces

Classes: Dance, music and yoga classes tap into movement, rhythm and relaxation to improve emotional wellness in tandem with physical health.

Hikes and Field Trips: Excursions both in and outside the community encourages exploration and social interaction.

Parties and Events: Social gatherings build community and friendship.

Scully has also found there to be a crucial need, going forward, among participants living with aging parents, and so the Scully team has recently expanded its mission to include the creation of a unique residential center for adults with developmental and physical disabilities.

Scully recognizes that the needs of physically and developmentally disabled adults are different than most individuals needing residential placement. This is due to multiple challenges stemming from the combination of their physical and developmental delays. In addition, some of Scully Learning Center members have siblings with similar disabilities who have never been separated. These sibling-ships present even greater challenge, as there are no guaranteed adult residential placements for siblings with multiple special needs in the same residence.

In our community, there are very few, if any residential options available to meet the needs of the physically and developmentally delayed adults. This proposed center will offer a nurturing environment that feels like home. Siblings can stay together and family members can live onsite during the transition.

As the first housing of its kind, Preserving Families Home will be a model for other cities and states. This novel residential home will enable a smooth and comfortable transition to a forever family home for physically and developmentally disabled adults and their siblings when their guardians can no longer care for them. Relatives will be welcome to reside in caregiver studio apartments while their loved ones adjust to their new settings and routines. With the right resources and support, participants can transition into a semi-independent (assisted) setting that provides peace of mind for concerned family members.

Scully Learning Center Foundation is poised to fill a crucial gap in services, enhancing the quality of life for its members and strengthening leadership in the field of developmental disability support. Click HERE to learn more about Scully Learning Center Foundation and how to support them in their mission.

Newly Remodeled

Cave Creek Fire Station

Will Help Protect Our Community

By Mayor Bob Morris

After the 2020 wildland fire burned approximately 2,700+ acres of Cave Creek property and impacted several structures, the Town Council worked quickly to find a solution to provide the community with the fire and emergency services it desperately needed. Beginning on January 3, 2022, the Town partnered with the Daisy Mountain Fire District. Daisy Mountain operates five fire stations and serves approximately 200 square miles of diverse terrain near Cave Creek. Daisy Mountain's familiarity with the region made it an outstanding partner with Cave Creek, and it saved many residents money by not having subscription fees for fire service.

Through this partnership, the Town agreed to construct a new fire station, purchase a fire engine and a brush truck, and hire and train the firefighters/paramedics needed to staff the station and equipment. All of this has been accomplished without new bonds or taxes.

With Daisy Mountain as a partner and Cave Creek having its firefighting resources, more emergency and fire resources are now available to respond quickly to fires and incidents in our town. Wildland fires in our area are being attacked more quickly and extinguished before they become potential major incidents thanks to our expanded available emergency equipment and crews. Cave Creek Fire Department and Daisy Mountain Fire District are saving more property and potentially more lives.

The dedication ceremony and open house will be held on Tuesday, December 10, starting at 9 a.m. I encourage all residents to attend this historic event for the Town. The new fire station is located at 37402 N. Cave Creek Road.

Look for more information about this special event on the Town’s website by clicking HERE..

The Marshal's Corner

Greetings from the Marshal,

What an amazing Taste of Cave Creek this year! Patty Pollnow and her team at Stagecoach Village did another excellent event. We are blessed as a community to have so many wonderful special events in Cave Creek.

As we continue our focus on public safety, I am finding more often people are "confused" as to why they’re being stopped by the Marshal's Office and Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Here is my attempt to help with some clarity as a public service message:

The speed limit in the town core is 30-miles an hour, ANY speed above 30-miles per hour is AGAINST THE LAW. Personally, I do not pull anyone over unless they’re driving more than12-miles per hour over the posted speed limit. I had a gentleman driving 45-miles per hour who could not understand why he was pulled over. The speed limit is a law, not a recommendation. Talking on your cell phone or texting while driving is also against the law. You will get pulled over and receive a citation. Failing to come to a complete stop prior to making a right on red is against the law. Slow rolling through a stop sign is...against the law. I, as well as the Sheriff's Office, do not randomly pull people over. We initiate traffic stops based upon violations of the law. Please obey the law and you will not be inconvenienced by being pulled over for a citation. I apologize to the majority of our residents who have to read this and scratch their heads. Those of you who I’m writing this for...you know who you are.

Fire Restrictions are still in effect. NO OPEN FIRES. Fire danger is still HIGH. No bonfires. Common sense folks. We do not want to see our community burn again. If we all work together, we can prevent needless fires. PLEASE.

‘Starting to hike again now that we have nicer weather? * Swing by Town Hall or the Cave Creek Tourism Bureau and grab a free safety whistle, graciously donated by Gary and Wendy, to help anyone lost or needing assistance while hiking. ‘Hiking and hear a whistle? PLEASE investigate. Find the source of the whistle and see if they need assistance. Too afraid to investigate? Call 911. We all need to work together to help our community. We have hikers who get lost, run out of water and suffer heat emergencies. Injured hikers too. Injured horseback riders and injured mountain bikers. We need to remember we're all neighbors. We are Creekers. We stick together and help when needed. Again, a HUGE thank you to Gary and Wendy for their generous donation to public safety.

*Read "Town Trails Do's and Don'ts" in the February 2024 Town newsletter (p2).

Stay Safe,

Marshal Stein

Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is seeking donors to bring joy to local families, children, and seniors through its 22nd annual Adopt-A-Family holiday gift program. This program helps make the holidays brighter for those in need across the north Phoenix foothills communities.

“We want to make sure our neighbors feel the warmth of the holiday season,” says Leigh Zydonik, Executive Director of Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center. “Many of our neighbors can’t afford a traditional holiday, so we team up with our generous community to make sure everyone has a gift under their tree and everything they need for a great, traditional dinner.”

The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is accepting donations of new board games, educational toys, Play-Doh, adult puzzle books, and large-print crossword books for seniors. Donations of new blankets, including lap blankets for seniors, are also welcome. Walmart or Visa gift cards worth $50 are especially helpful for families.

Those interested in participating in the program are encouraged to sign up HERE by November 30, 2024.

Donations, gift cards, and monetary gifts can be dropped off during Fill the Sleigh Week from December 8-12, 2024, at The Holland Community Center near Cave Creek and Carefree Highway.

Hidden in the Hills

28th Annual Studio Tour

By Sue Kern-Fleischer

Arizona’s largest and longest-running artist studio tour, Hidden in the Hills (HITH), takes place during the last two weekends of November: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22, 23 & 24 and Nov. 29, 30 & Dec. 1. Coordinated by the nonprofit Sonoran Arts League, this year’s free, self-guided tour features 179 artists at 44 studios throughout the scenic Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale.

Now in its 28th year, the inspirational event attracts thousands of patrons who appreciate fine art and seek a variety of mediums, styles and price ranges. The art tour also attracts holiday shoppers who want to find original, unique gifts. Each artist’s studio is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during both weekends of the tour, giving patrons plenty of time to visit multiple studios.

Some guests like to visit studios based on the genre of art they are attracted to. Others may choose studios based on a certain style, such as contemporary or western. It’s also fun to get a group of friends together and meander through the tour, stopping randomly at studios along the way.

While artists will be showcasing and selling many diverse pieces of art, participating artists have voluntarily contributed one piece of art that will be labeled “Art from the Heart.” When sold, the artists will donate 100% of the proceeds for this one piece to the Sonoran Arts League.

Cave Creek Concierge Tour 2024 - Review

Cave Creek Concierge Tour 2024, hosted by the Town of Cave Creek and organized by the Cave Creek Tourism Bureau, was a huge success. Representatives of resorts, hotels, and tourism industry affiliates from all over of the Valley spent the afternoon on a comfy and cool 27-passenger bus learning about Cave Creek shops, restaurants, attractions, events, history, and more. Guests also enjoyed a little “taste” here and there along the way. The afternoon ended with a delightful gathering and dinner at Local Jonny’s Tavern & Café.

Participants returned home with wonderful memories of their afternoon in Cave Creek AND a swag bag filled with gifts as reminders of all our town has to offer. The many cool items, plus gift cards and coupons will surely inspire them to continue their Cave Creek adventure when they return on their own.

Participants ended the day smiling and quite impressed with Cave Creek, but also excited about sharing memories of this great little town with their hotel visitors. AND, when those visitors ask, “What’s a fun area day-trip?” the immediate response will be, “Cave Creek, of course!”

Many thanks to the Town of Cave Creek and also the Cave Creek Tourism Bureau’s concierge tour committee members Darlene Southern, Margie Hans, and Nina Spitzer.

Oct 12: Empty Bowls

The Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion in Carefree was buzzing with excitement on Saturday as members of our community came out in force to shop the 25th Annual Empty Bowls, an event presented in partnership between Foothills Food Bank and the Sonoran Arts League. Each bowl was made with love by local artists, art students, Arizona Wood Turners, and community members who wanted to make a contribution. More than 600 bowls were purchased with additional sales taking place at the Our Lady of Joy Holiday Fair in November.

Oct 12: Desert Survival and Hiking

Basics

Cave Creek Museum volunteer and presenter Paul Diefenderfer (Dief) stood in front of a sold-out audience anxious to hear him speak of desert survival and hiking basics. Dief is a hiker, a mountain rescue specialist, a rock climber, a mountain biker, and an animal rescuer. He spoke of the desert as an unforgiving place, with extreme temperatures, limited water sources, and potential wildlife encounters. Dief's valuable presentation informed listeners of how to be prepared and what to do in the event of an emergency and will help them be safer and more prepared in future desert experiences.

The weather was perfect and stars/planets shone brightly while a full house (or in this case, parking lot) of attendees enjoyed excellent astronomy information and entertaining quips from Phoenix Astronomical Society President Stu Brackney and astronomer Mark Johnston. A mid-show break revealed the raffle winners of three beautiful, donated telescopes. Once again, kudos and appreciation to Bruce Arlen for his passion and dedication to Dark Sky.
