Greetings!
The long nights and cold days of winter are an invitation to seek nourishment and joy in unexpected places.
This past month, Holden Village welcomed students from three colleges and one seminary for “January Term” classes to build and practice community while learning together about topics ranging from religion to environmental studies.
Villagers embraced new experiences from learning to cross country ski, meditating in a snowy candlelit labyrinth with an Epiphany bonfire, working together for the “Copper Chef” challenge to create a delicious meal with seven wacky ingredients, keeping the wood furnaces stoked, and participating in the daily rhythms of caring for one another and this place.
We hope you may find renewal in this season by joining to sing Holden Evening Prayer, finding sustenance and growth in the darkness like nutrient-rich compost, and engaging the questions around you with good courage.
Faithfully,
Stacy Kitahata, Mark Bach, and Kathie Bach

The biblical concept presents a vision for abundant life for all people — the restoration of relationships, cessation of debts, a community in which no one can be excessively wealthy, and stewardship of the land. We hope you will join the conversation. More faculty photos and bios coming soon.

Join Villagers in the sustainability practice of composting!
Worm composting or "vermiculture" can be practiced in a small space such as an apartment, condo, classroom or home. At Holden Village, there is one worm compost demonstration bin in the Hike Haus and one in the Holden School.
Learn from Village Naturalist, Amy Tongue, about starting your own worm composting system. Together, we can all strive to reduce greenhouse gas emission in small ways that add up. The good news is we end up with richer soil as well!

You can engage with the wide array of teaching faculty topics from previous summers by listening to the Holden Village podcast!
Check out an interview from summer 2021 with Rev. Terry Kyllo, a Lutheran pastor serving as the director of Paths to Understanding: Bridging Bias and Building Unity. He is the founder of Neighbors in Faith, answering Islamophobia with building the beloved community and recognizing and honoring one another’s humanity.

Holden is tackling an important historic restoration project that will benefit all our Villagers – repairing our 80-year-old porches! Thanks to amazing volunteers this past summer Lodge 4, Chalet 6, and Chalet 1 are decked out in new porches that will last generations.
All material is carefully cut, hauled, and milled from the woods surrounding Holden Village before becoming a beloved piece of a porch. Volunteers are needed year-round to support this project, a strong skill level is not required.
