A RESIDENT'S STORY
Honoring Black History Month
Our Fellowship Square Communications Coordinator, Karinne DiMeglio, recently sat down with with Largo Landing Fellowship House resident Ms. Gabrielle Bryant to hear her story of growing up during the Civil Rights era. From a young age, her faith and kind heart helped her cope with segregation in her daily life.

RESIDENT LIFE
Keeping an Eye on Health during National Glaucoma Month
January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month! When it comes to our senses, most of us rely on all of them to make our lives easier. As we age, some of them start to decline. In particular, a decline in eyesight can really impact day-to-day life. See how our Fellowship Square communities promoted eye health in January:

The Prince George’s County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America visited the Largo Landing Fellowship House residents. They were excited to receive the kind donation of books and healthy snacks!

Did You Know with a large question mark
Did you know: According to the CDC, anyone can get glaucoma, but certain groups are at higher risk. These groups include African Americans over age 40, all people over age 60, people with a family history of glaucoma, and people who have diabetes. African Americans are 6 to 8 times more likely to get glaucoma than whites. People with diabetes are 2 times more likely to get glaucoma than people without diabetes.
COMMUNITY PARTNER
New Life Church Offers Positivity and Support to Residents

We extend our gratitude to New Life Church for their meaningful service to the residents of Hunters Woods Fellowship House. Under Pastor Victor's guidance, residents have enjoyed bible study every Saturday afternoon. This month, residents were treated to a unique intergenerational New Year's Celebration with the New Life Church members.

Pastor Victor, thank you for all you do every day to contribute positively to our residents' spiritual wellness!
CHRISTY'S CORNER
The Importance of Spiritual Wellness
Opportunities and programming to connect with one’s own spiritual and religious beliefs is very important to older adults. According to a recent poll, 84% of older adults said that religious and/or spiritual beliefs are important to them.

At Fellowship Square, we have provided religious and spiritual support through our Wegner Chaplaincy program since 1956. We have had several pastors employed to provide services as well as partnering with many local churches for bringing Fellowship House residents to weekly services.

Over the years, our resident population has become more diverse. While 58% still consider themselves of the Christian faith, we also are seeing increases in other faiths and just in general over spiritual connectedness, not necessarily associated with any one religion.

We have embarked on a new church outreach initiative to help us reconnect with former church partners as well as to expand on our existing partnerships. Churches and other places of worship are an important part of achieving our mission because of they provide much needed volunteers, in-kind and financial support as well as new connections within the community.

If you are part of a church or spiritual group that would be willing to share your time and give support to older adults, please reach out and connect with us. We are hoping to grow our spiritual and religious offerings and seek new partners to help us meet this need.

With gratitude,
