Following the Path of Francis

September 25, 2024

Maureen O'Brien

Reflect

Ilia Delio writes, “The Franciscan path is different because it does not ask, ‘What would Jesus do?’ but, ‘How does Jesus live in me?’” Today, take some time to reflect on this profound question. How is Jesus living in you?

Prayer

Blessed St. Francis,

We thank you for showing us the way into our heart where God

Gloriously shines and shines.

Help us find the golden presence within.

The peace.

St. Francis, your gentle beauty leads us to Christ, and we thank you for helping us fill our lives as you filled yours—overflowing with grace and hope.

Flooded with light.

Act

Take a long, deep breath and know that it’s true: With every single breath, the light of Jesus lives in you.

DeCOLORES ALL!

WYD 2027 in South Korea to Focus on Courage, Interreligious Dialogue

Justin McLellan, Catholic News Service

Wednesday 25th of September 2024

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The first World Youth Day to be hosted in a country where Christians are a minority will seek to instill young people with the courage to share the Gospel while fostering interreligious dialogue, organizers of the event said.

World Youth Day 2027, to be hosted in Seoul, South Korea, will help young people "think about the dialogue between faith and modernity," Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life said at a news conference Sept. 24.

The challenges young people face today -- a loss of purpose, climate change, the digital revolution and economic inequality -- "will stimulate young people to make their personal contribution so that contemporary culture may be permeated and transformed by the Gospel, with its power, light and freshness," the cardinal said.

And in Asia, a continent "receptive to the coexistence of cultures, dialogue and complementarity," the cardinal said young pilgrims will advance "on their path of learning to become messengers of peace in the world so torn by conflict and confrontation."

At the closing Mass for World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal -- attended by an estimated 1.5 million young people -- Pope Francis announced that Seoul will be the host for the next World Youth Day in 2027, following a celebration of young people at the Vatican during the Holy Year 2025.

"Thus, from the western border of Europe it will move to the Far East," the pope said in his announcement. "This is a marvelous sign of the church's universality and of the dream of unity to which you bear witness."

World Youth Day has been hosted in Asia only once before -- World Youth Day 1995 was held in Manila, Philippines.

The Vatican announced Sept. 24 the themes for the church's upcoming celebrations of young people, both taken from St. John's Gospel: the Jubilee of the Youth, to be held in Rome in 2025, will have the theme "You also are my witnesses, because you have been with me," and the theme for World Youth Day 2027 will be "Take courage! I have overcome the world."

Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-Taick of Seoul said that World Youth Day pilgrims will become "courageous missionaries inspired to live out the joy of the Gospel they have found."

World Youth Day 2027 "will be more than just a large gathering," he said at the Vatican news conference. "It will be a meaningful journey where young people, united with Jesus Christ, reflect on and discuss the modern challenges and injustices they face."

However, "Korea stands in a unique context distinct from previous World Youth Day hosts," said Seoul Auxiliary Bishop Paul Kyung Sang Lee, coordinator of World Youth Day 2027, since the country is "characterized by the harmonious coexistence of diverse religious traditions."

"Within this environment, the Catholic Church of Korea has steadfastly embodied the Christian virtues of forgiveness and sharing, fostering these values in society while coexisting peacefully with other faiths," he said.

According to the Pew Research Center, 52% of South Koreans have no religious affiliation, 32% are Christian and 14% are Buddhist. Vatican statistics say Catholics make up 11.3% of South Korea's population of 51.6 million people.

Archbishop Chung said the preparatory process "will definitely have concrete plans to include people from different religious backgrounds, including those who have no religion, so that they can come together and join us during our preparatory process."

During World Youth Day 2023, a number of interreligious events were offered to participants, such as guided tours of mosques and Hindu temples in Lisbon.

Cardinal Farrell said that Pope Francis wanted to select Seoul as the host for World Youth Day 2027 because "the pope wants to break out to the whole world."

"There's too much conflict, there's too much division among us all, and the Holy Father would like to bring us into dialogue with each other," he said. "Not to convert people, but to prove and to show that we can all live together respecting each other's beliefs, respecting the authentic culture of each place."

Despite South Korea's geographic distance from countries with large Catholic populations, the cardinal said the number of the attendees at World Youth Day 2023 was nearly double the number estimated by organizers.

"I believe there will be a similar surge of visitors and young people to World Youth Day in Seoul," he said. "It may be very far, but it's not far in today's world."

Gentle Friendship

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”

         My Dear Friends in Christ,

Contrary to these words of Jesus, our present-day society often seems infatuated with GOATs. And I don’t mean the kind that stereo-typically eat tin cans and newspapers. I mean those among us that we spend endless hours debating as the Greatest Of All Time – the GOATs of sports, the GOAT singer, actors or president. We might even slip a pope or two into competition on such a list. It’s obviously not a new thing. Even the apostles argued among themselves about which one of them was the GOAT.

Tuesdays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM

The Food Pantry is always in need of any non perishable food items such as canned soups, pasta and sauce products, baking goods, cereals, canned tuna or chicken, boxed meals such as Hamburger & Tuna Helpers, canned vegetables and canned fruit and fruit juice. Liquid dish detergent, Kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper and cleaning products are very much needed. Personal hygiene products, such as deodorant, body wash/soap and shampoos are staples in every household and always appreciated!!

Thank you for your continued support of the food pantry!

Mary, Queen of Martyrs Parishioners, we need your help! On the 3rd Tuesday of each month, we receive a large order of food delivered from the Boston Food Bank. This delivery is generally about 3,000 lbs. Our staff is older and unloading this amount of products is difficult for the small group of people who usually help.

PLEASE consider taking an hour of your time to come by the church around 8:30 AM that day to help unload. We meet every third Tuesday of the month!

We now have a food donation box at Saint Kateri in the function hall by the office doorway. You may put your food donations in this box during office hours or after the weekend Masses.

Dear Parishioners,

My name is Chris and I am a senior at BC High School. Today, I would love the opportunity to share my recent experience on a trip to NPH Guatemala, what I experienced at Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (“our little brothers and sisters”) and how we all play a part.

Last November, 19 Juniors and Seniors from my school traveled to NPH Guatemala for what I thought would be a generic service trip. To my surprise, it was far more than that. Our group toured the home, lived and ate rice and beans like the pequeños, visited other parts of Guatemala such as Antigua, and helped build an ecological recreation park for the children at the home, which honors a former pequeña Yocari - who recently passed away. Most importantly, our group spent a lot of time interacting with all the Pequeños at the home and seeing all that NPH provides them day in and day out.

Between the many soccer matches, board games, meals, and other activities completed alongside the Pequeños, a special bond that will last a lifetime was built. It didn’t matter that there was a language barrier, or that we were different ages or from different backgrounds.

It was clear none of this would have been possible without the help of the NPH workers and donors. These children live a better life because of you, NPH and God. They were happy, energetic, and welcoming of our group, and it was clear that the NPH staff in Guatemala was excited to have us on their property, which I must say is very well kept and extremely safe.

Being in Guatemala alongside these Pequeños provides a change in perspective that you are not able to fully encompass unless you visit the home. With that said, if there is any one main takeaway I would like to leave you with, it is that these children are given the best possible opportunity to grow and succeed because of what NPH is doing for them.

They have made an impact on my life, but it’s more important that we have a greater impact on their lives. Please help NPH give these Pequeños the lives they deserve. Please visit nphusa.org for more information and I hope you consider taking a trip to a home, or sponsoring a pequeños. It will change your life.

God Bless,   Chris L.

"Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward."

Scripture Reflection for Sept. 29, 2024, Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deacon Greg Kandra

Wednesday 25th of September 2024

In our divided and divisive times, this weekend's Gospel should give all of us pause. It poses some hard questions about how we judge others -- and asks us to look more closely at how we judge -- or fail to judge -- ourselves.

Should we be mistrustful or suspicious toward people who aren't like us? Should we be defensive and territorial? Doesn't the good work of God carry a copyright? Maybe not.

After John described how Jesus' apostles tried to prevent someone from driving out demons in Christ's name -- because, as he put it, "he does not follow us" -- Jesus disagreed. He proposed another approach.

"Do not prevent him," he replied. "There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us."

With that, Christ not only turned down the temperature in what was undoubtedly a heated exchange among competing exorcists, but also offered an invaluable lesson in tolerance and understanding: "Whoever is not against us is for us." In effect, he was saying: Anyone seeking to do good in the name of Jesus should not be prevented or interrupted. Who knows how God might work?

The catechism offers this insight: "Created in God's image and called to know and love him, the person who seeks God discovers certain ways of coming to know him," which can include both the physical world and other people (CCC 31).

Put another way, God often writes straight in crooked lines. You can never predict how he might seek to work in the world, or what instruments he might use.

More pointedly, Jesus in this episode went on to suggest that the difficulty isn't necessarily other people. In fact, he said, we should look more closely in the mirror. Maybe the real problem is closer than you realize.

Consider what might be causing you to sin. Is your hand a problem? Cut if off. Your foot? Cut it off. Your eye? Pluck it out. Again and again, Jesus challenged his followers not to spend so much time concerned with the missteps of others, but to look more closely at their own weaknesses, faults, limitations, sins.

You think other people are the issue? Think again.

There are powerful and provocative lessons here for our own time, when so much of our culture (especially, these days, our politics) is reduced to tribal factions, disputes and squabbling sides. So many of us are often quick to label others, to be simplistic or paint people in broad strokes. We believe half-truths and misinformation, or only listen to those who tell us what we want to hear.

But one of the important lessons of this Gospel is that seeking to pigeonhole the other can lead us to pay less attention to ourselves and our own shortcomings. That has to stop. We need to begin by working on our own conversion.

Do we spend too much time judging people outside our own tribe and finding fault simply because they aren't a part of our group?

What are our own deficiencies and weaknesses that need to be removed, vanquished, amputated?

How can we better build up the Kingdom of God, beginning with our own choices, actions and habits?

Among other things, Christ's teachings here stand as a vivid lesson in humility, by making clear to the apostles (and us) that those of us who think we have all the answers are usually wrong -- and by asserting that the important work of conversion begins close to home. Changing the world begins with changing ourselves.

Mary, Queen of Martyrs Parish sponsors an annual baby shower. This year your donations will go to Friends of the Unborn. Our baby baskets/cradle will be at the back of all 3 of our churches on the weekend of October 26/27. A list will be provided, please give what you can. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support in this wonderful program.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops invites you to take action in protecting international religious freedom, which is increasingly under siege around the world with more people harassed, arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and even killed simply because of their faith. That’s why USCCB has been a strong supporter of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), an independent, bipartisan agency, doing vital work to monitor and report on the worst violations of religious freedom globally.

USCIRF’s reauthorization expires on September 30, 2024. S. 3764 and H.R. 7025 would reauthorize USCIRF and would extend its modest funding until September 30, 2026. You can contact your representatives in Washington to urge their support – to learn how, visit

FIGHT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

BECOME A SHEPHERD

Stop Human Trafficking and Exploitation. Protect, Help, Empower, and Restore Dignity (SHEPHERD) educates lay and religious leaders about human trafficking from a Catholic perspective, equipping them with needed knowledge and skills to combat forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation at the local level. Visit the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops website to learn more: www.usccb.org/committees/administrative/become-shepherd or scan the QR code.

This week’s suggestion:

PRAY for victims of human trafficking:

Loving Father, we seek your divine protection for all who are exploited and enslaved. For those forced into labor, trafficked into sexual slavery, and denied freedom. We beseech you to release them from their chains. Grant them protection, safety, and empowerment. Restore their dignity and provide them a new beginning. Show us how we might end exploitation by addressing its causes. Help us reach out in support of victims and survivors of human trafficking. Make us instruments of your spirit for their liberation. For this we pray through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

CALLING ALL KNITTERS!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The Mary, Queen of Martyrs Bags of Love & Hope project, which distributes backpacks filled with practical, everyday items to vulnerable victims and survivors of human trafficking, is looking to include handknitted (and crocheted!) hats, scarves, and handwarmers in our bags this winter.

If you’re a knitter and would like to help, you may prefer to use your own favorite patterns and/or yarn OR, we can supply patterns and yarn, if needed. To learn more, please contact us at mqomsjm@gmail.com. Thank you!

CARE FOR CREATION

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Counteract the "Throwaway Culture” - In your daily life, try to identify the ways in which you can choose reusables, rather than disposables, such as coffee mugs, reusable bags, or cloth napkins, and commit to making one change during this month.

Thank God for His Wonderful Handiwork - Before and after meals, say a short prayer of thanksgiving for the lifegiving food that sustains and nourishes us.

Implore God’s Help and Ask His Pardon - In calling for a deep "ecological conversion," Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of examining one's own conscience, of recognizing one's sins against creation, however great or small. (Source: USCCB)
