“Dust If You Must” feels especially appropriate as I watch the corn begin to turn yellow. I’m preparing for the combines and tractors to enter the fields, kicking up all sorts of dirt and debris that will inevitably find its way into my home and create plenty of dust.
I’m not one to boast about household cleanliness, and yet I appreciate the wisdom behind Milligan’s words. Life is a series of choices. We are constantly deciding how to balance priorities, responsibilities, and the things that bring us joy. Somehow, in the middle of it all, we also have to find the time and space to dream, to explore, and to try new things.
Some choices are difficult, while others come easily. I love the quote, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” There is something so simple, and so true, about that thought.
So, if we want to keep it simple, we can do nothing, we can dust, or we can chase our dreams. I’m certainly not suggesting those are our only choices. They are simply three of the millions of choices available to us today, tomorrow, and every day that follows.
And perhaps that is the point: the dust will still be there tomorrow. The fields will continue to change. The combines will roll, the tractors will work, and eventually, the dust will settle. But our choices are ours to make.
So today, what will you choose?
