The Month of May Truly Bursts

at Hudson Catholic

The life of a student (and the Administration and Faculty) at McGinley Square is one filling with great pride amid a jam-packed schedule in the penultimate month of the school year. Surely you remember the spring month during your years at Hudson? It is a time of anticipation for the end of classes and preparation for exams (Seniors start May 19th); the spring sports schedules is full tilt in a chase for country supremacy (at this writing, Boys Volleyball remains undefeated, #11 in the State Rankings); the De La Salle Senior Awards dinner; National Honor Society laurels; the Junior Ring Ceremony that reminds the latest Hawk ring bearers that they are soon to be Rising Seniors; the rite of passage that accompanies the Prom season; Associate Degrees bestowed on our graduates in the SPU Dual Degree Program (marking the 5th cohort group to, oddly, receive a college degree before a high school diploma) and, somewhat earlier than usual, the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation will occur on May 29th and 31st, respectively.

Heady days, indeed, at The Home of The Hawks. Traditions continue as present day Hawks experience them for the first time. And the thread that runs through the 60-year history of Hudson Catholic lengthens that much further.

The last page of the first 'Hawk' yearbook featured a silhouette of Senior Tom Davidson '68 in the halls of Hudson, and a quote: "AND SO WE COME, NOT TO THE END, BUT TO THE BEGINNING." Those words were reflective of a single class, our first, as they completed their pioneer mission to introduce Hudson Catholic to the Hudson County educational landscape. '68 could not know how prescient their words were, and that they would provide the guidepost to 57 more years, and counting, of Hudson Catholic graduating classes. But here we are, in 2025, with words spoken in 1968 that mean so much to this year's graduating class and every one since then.

Our 2025 Goal: $50,312

Our Results: $55,095

Another Record Setter for our 4th Day of Giving!

Bill Cullen '72, Bob Peake '86, Shannon Ruiz '13, Brian Daly '92 Lead the Way!

Company Gift Matches:

a brilliant strategy to maximize donor impact!

Hudson Catholic is greatly appreciative to receive your gift as part of our Hudson Catholic Day of Giving campaign! We couldn't surpass our ambitious goal for the day or do the things we do for our young Hawks without you! All told, $30,095 in gifts, along with the $25,000 match, brought us to a new and 4th consecutive record for our Day of Giving, at $55,095!

Your gift match to get us to our gift match was part of a brilliant strategy among a few Hawks who answered the bell on April 7th! Please maintain that best practice for the next such campaign! Your generosity and thoughtfulness are appreciated.

Our Challenges are Always There;

Thankfully, so are our Match Challenges!

We are not a school with a hefty endowment fund; in fact, we have no endowment fund. We are not a school that can any longer rely on an Archdiocese to shoulder part of our operating costs, or even capital costs. And so, our financial challenges renew each and every year, so we must continue to ask for the ongoing support of our Hawk alumni and friends to provide ample funding for tuition assistance for deserving students whose families find it hard to meet our tuition obligations, and to help us balance our books in meeting our fully-loaded operating costs.

When we all work together and are able to close the book on another successful year of graduating the latest class of Hawks, sending them off well-prepared for their college years and their chosen paths in life, we can all take pride and satisfaction in completing our Lasallian traditions for the present year, and continuing our Lasallian traditions into the next.

As we move nearer to our school and fiscal year-end, we are mindful that your generosity takes many forms throughout the year: from Challenge Match Gifts by Gerry McGraw '72, Bill Cullen '72, and an Anonymous Alumnus who help motivate giving at the calendar year-end, on the April 7th Hudson Catholic Day of Giving, and at the fiscal year-end, June 30th, to a good number of our Hawk Angels who make major gifts, voluntarily, when asked, or anonymously, to those who are thoughtful in soliciting matching gifts from their companies, to Hawks who provide gifts on a recurring monthly basis, to those who make a gift for the first time, to all those who are reliably consistent in their annual giving.

For what each of you have done, and will continue to do for Hudson Catholic, may God bless you for the life you live in service to others.

Plan to Come Out for

our Newest Hall of Famers

Please plan to come out and celebrate the deeds of our newly elected Hudson Catholic Hall of Famers for their many and substantial contributions to the life and community of Hudson Catholic over its 60 years in service to the working class families of Hudson County. We celebrate their lives lived in service to others, their personal and professional achievements, and sacrifices, that cast honor on Hudson Catholic and the memory of all those who have acted to make it an integral part of Jersey City and our lives.

For tickets, testimonials or sponsorships, please go to hudsoncatholic.org/galahf. For those unable to attend, please consider supporting our event and honoring our Hall of Famers with a testimonial or sponsorship.

The Hall of Fame Induction Event

begins at 6:00pm on Thursday, May 15th, 2025

at il Villagio, 651 Rt. 17 North in Carlstadt, NJ

Our 2025 Hall of Famers

SSgt William 'Billy' Neil, Jr. USA/USN Taps 3-22-08: 14 years of service to country, Special Forces/ Green Beret, combat duty, valor, and commendations of the highest order stand as testaments to his bravery and selflessness, and as examples of heroism to us all. His exemplary behavior and sacrifice have brought honor to himself and to all who pass through the halls of Hudson Catholic.

Our President and Principal, Terry Matthews, is a 40-year servant to the Hudson Catholic family and is responsible for delivering the life changing education we offer to many children of working class Hudson County families. He is well known and respected by people and organizations from among the many facets of community life, and appreciated for the work he does in developing great students earmarked for leadership in society.

William ‘Bill’ Cullen ’72, From his school days, Bill is remembered as Hudson Catholic Athlete of the Year, Brother Henry Laffey Award Recipient at Graduation, Hudson County Track Champion and Record Setter, Magee 880 Champion, and Penn Relay and Millrose Games Medalist. Recently retired as CEO of AEGIS Insurance, Bill is recognized for his venerable business career and for bringing a partnership with St. John’s University's Greenberg School of Risk Management to Hudson Catholic.

Larry Costanza '76, long-serving member of the school's Board of Consultors and multiple County Championship JV Basketball Coach, has provided decades of service to Hudson Catholic, its students, athletes, alumni, and events, continuing to set an example of our Lasallian mission. In addition, his deep commitment to philanthropy has led him to service as a board member for charitable organizations, such as the Sisters of Charity and Inner City Schools, reflecting his dedication to supporting underserved communities, fostering education, and promoting opportunities for those in need.

The 2000 State Champion Ice Hockey Team, recently inducted into the New Jersey High School Ice Hockey Hall of Fame, is the greatest team in the 36-year history of the Hawk Hockey Program, and only the 2nd team in school history to win a State Championship. The Hockey Hawks competed in the 1999-2000 National ‘A’ Division, the state’s toughest division, opening the season with a victory over the defending State Champion Seton Hall Prep and poetically bookending their season with another victory over Seton Hall to claim the Parochial A State Championship. They went on to win the Overall New Jersey State Championship, defeating Public School Champion Bayonne at Continental Arena in the State Tournament of Champions finale, completing their historic season with a record of 22 and 4, and becoming the only team in school history to end their season ranked #1 in the state by the Star Ledger.

Hall of Fame on Display

With this year's election and induction of five new Hall of Famers, it became readily apparent that we were going to have a space dilemma in continuing the physical display of plaques in the area in the Lobby designated for the proud display of those who have brought great honor to Hudson Catholic. The tough choice to move to a rotating video display was made by President-Principal Terry Matthews, himself one of the five new inductees who forced the choice to be made.

We encourage our Hall members, and Hawks of all stripes for that matter, to stop by and have a look at the new Video Hall of Fame Display.

In Memoriam

Brother Kevin J. Stanton, FSC

1938-2025

Hudson Catholic Principal, 1983-1991

Hudson Catholic has lost a giant of a man, its longest serving Christian Brother Principal, Hall of Famer Brother Kevin J. Stanton, FSC, who passed away from medical complications associated with prostate cancer on Saturday, April 12th in Philadelphia.

Brother Kevin came to Jersey City in 1983, from Lasalle Academy in Iligan, Philippines, as our Principal, having no prior experience with the Hudson Catholic community. He was well up for the job.

Brother Kevin touched many of our Hawks' lives. During his tenure, he presided over Hudson Catholic's 25th Anniversary Jubilee and associated Capital Campaign that resulted in our purchase of the land next to the driveway to the Brothers Residence that is now our school parking lot. And he had the forethought to remove 'For Boys' from the Bergen Avenue side of the Gym long before Hudson Catholic opened its doors to girls. His service to Hudson Catholic is a big reason that we stand strong and proud today, during our 60th year of serving the Hudson County community. And with an eye for talent, and our thanks, he hired, in 1985, a man who all these years later became our current President-Principal, Mr. Terence Matthews. For his service to others, Brother Kevin Stanton was elected to the Hudson Catholic Hall of Fame in 2023.

We share Brother Kevin with several other Lasallian schools, notably Calvert Hall College H.S. in Baltimore and West Catholic H.S. in Philadelphia, at which he served longer tenures than at Hudson Catholic -- 1961-1968 and 1996-2005 at Calvert Hall, and 1968-1973; 1991-1996; and 2013-2016 at West Catholic. He began his FSC service at the La Salle College Scholasticate in 1957 in Elkins Park, PA, served in Baltimore District Leadership as the Auxiliary Visitor in 2008-2009, and in DENA leadership, for Advancement, in 2009-2013. He served at La Salle University in 2016-2023, thereafter retiring to the the Christian Brothers Community at Anselm Hall on the La Salle University campus, where he resided until his passing.

A Wake and Service were held at La Salle University De La Salle Chapel in Philadelphia. Brother Kevin is interred at the Christian Brothers Cemetery in Beltsville, MD at 6001 Ammendale Road.

Born Martin John Stanton in Philadelphia, PA 15 April 1938

Died at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia 12 April 2025

Entered the Ammendale MD Novitiate 15 June 1956

Received the Religious Habit and Name of Gerald Kevin 7 Sept 1956

Pronounced Perpetual Vows in Baltimore MD 17 August 1963

May Brother Kevin J. Stanton, FSC rest in peace.

St. John Baptist de La Salle Pray for Us. Live Jesus in Our Hearts Forever

Message From The President,

-- Terry Mathews

This month’s message is an easy one: This is the time our families rely on us most. It’s the end of the year and people are frantically catching up. If you have the means and the inclination, please consider an end of the year gift so that we can help the neediest Hawk families. It’s been a tough year across the nation, and Hudson Catholic and our families have felt the crunch just as much as everyone else. However, our Lasallian Mission means that we simply have to make it work. That’s what Hawks do. We fly high no matter what challenges we may face. As always, I thank you, our staff thanks you, and our students and families thank you for believing in them and the mission of Hudson Catholic High School.

I hope everyone has an opportunity to stop by school and see the new digitized Hall of Fame display. We were running out of wall space and technology gives us the opportunity to provide pictures, biographies and links to stories old and new for our Hall of Famers. We are also able to set up a page for our Athletic Wall of Fame members that now allows us to tell their stories to go along with the banners hanging in the gym. We celebrate our Hawks at every opportunity.

Finally, on a personal note, I was saddened to learn of Brother Kevin Stanton’s passing. Br. Kevin took a chance on me way back in September of 1985! I was a raw, 22-year-old bartender with an earring and little idea as to what I was getting myself into. But Br. Kevin saw something in me and was a fantastic mentor and role model. When I drove down to Lasalle University for his service, I couldn’t help but smile and be thankful to the man who opened his doors to me and gave me a lifelong vocation.

Just one of many things that unites us as Hawks is that Hudson Catholic alumni spread around the nation and the world are making incredible contributions to their communities, professions, and to Hudson Catholic.

King and Queen of the Castle

Recently passing, at 103, Mrs. Kathleen Castle was the mother of two alumni, Edward '70 and Stephen '75, and Colleen, wife of Jim Sweeney '73, and the wife of the late and legendary Men's Club figure, Edward Castle. We thought to recall the Castle Family legacy at Hudson Catholic by reprinting, from BTL #60, this article about how our cafeteria became known as Castle Hall.

A Cafeteria Fit for a Castle

All of us call it ‘the Caf’. Many of us know it to be named ‘Castle Hall’. None of us really call it that. But there is a plaque that says so. It hangs on a column in the Cafeteria, and has since 1977, down the left side from the top of the stairway, less than half way to the kitchen doors. Every school day, kids convene, engage, eat, and carry-on under the watchful gaze of Mr. Edward Castle.

The plaque's inscription reads: "The Hudson Catholic Men’s Club and School Administration dedicate this room as 'Castle Hall' in honor of Edward Castle. We rejoiced in the uniqueness of his methods, for his untiring efforts on behalf of Hudson Catholic. Charter Member. Past President. Entertainment Chairman. Dedicated, December 3, 1977.”

Ed Castle enjoyed the camaraderie of the Men's Club and was one of its first presidents. He worked and became friends with the other dads. They put on fundraisers like the Night at the Races, hosted Christmas parties at the school, and helped out at football and basketball games. They enjoyed each other’s company as much as they enjoyed donating their time. Ed also donated time at Sacred Heart Academy where his daughter went to school and at his parish, St. Anne's. Volunteerism was in his blood and he was a wonderful role model for the generation that followed him.

Brother Patrick King remembers Ed Castle “as a worker bee - more than that - a king bee. The Men’s Club had a 'bazaar' in the early years as a fundraiser.”

At that time they were not committed to football, but at some point, they committed to supporting a very expensive sport by a margin of 1 vote. They began a very lucrative bingo and for a number of years they were in the money. At the center of that operation, and later on in “Night at the Races” was Ed Castle.

But as all good things must come to an end, The ‘Races’ faced stiff opposition from the Bingo Regulators, and history shows that the ‘Bingomen’ won out.

In our school’s early days, Ed Castle was at the center -- according to Brother Pat, “a source of energy, devotion to Hudson Catholic, and the King Bee for advancing the school’s activities and prosperity. The bazaar, bingo and races were all held in the cafeteria. Easy to see how the connection was made to name the “hall” in Mr. Castle’s honor.”

Mr. Castle, as you would expect, sent two sons to Hudson Catholic - Edward Jr ’70 and Stephen ’75 - and gave his daughter to Hudson Catholic in a way. Colleen married Jim Sweeney ’73!

From Stephen Castle ’75: “I was only 8 or 9 when my brother entered high school and my parents got deeply involved with Hudson Catholic for the next 10 years. I remember that the whole point of the parent organizations was to raise money for things the school community needed. The school hadn’t been around for all that long and the families in those organizations were very committed to its success. I think the pursuit of that shared goal paid a social dividend (community and friendship) and some parents like my father were involved in the school even when they didn’t have a child in attendance. My father made friends easily. He was a very likable guy and his enthusiasm for the school and its mission of Catholic education made him one of a few great leaders for the “Men’s Club”. I think they honored him because his love and commitment for the school was evident and inspired others - it was infectious.”

Yearbook Fever

The Alumni Association is at it again!

The Alumni Association, in its never ending quest to digitize, and make available (online) to all of you who have their yearbooks packed away in the attic, continues to march through the years and has recently added a gaggle of 'The Hawk' editions to the growing collection that can be visited by clicking on the button below.

The collection now includes the ten class years of 1988, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2012.

All told, that makes 38 of the 57 graduating classes' yearbooks online. And the good Hawks who labor in this regard promise not to rest until all 57, soon to be 58, Hawk yearbooks are posted up!
