A Message from ORES Principal Denise Francisco
Welcome to October and what is already the 6 th  week of school for 2019-2020. The first few weeks have been very smooth! However, we do continue to have safety concerns with the Caison Road area each morning during the morning arrival process. We need to reiterate to all parents that the Car Rider Drop Off is located on the Media Entrance side of the school and you get to that line by entering off of Hwy 150 onto Autumn Gate Drive (Twelve Oaks Neighborhood). The Caison Road side of the school is reserved for students that need to be walked into the school with a parent and should not be used as a routine way to enter the school on a daily basis. We encourage parents who drive to school to use the Car Rider line due to the very limited number of spaces available to park along Caison Road. We have now started moving the Car Rider line earlier (around 7:03) and the line moves rather quickly so please give this a try. On Friday, we had several instances that were not safe, and we do not want anyone to get hit or for there to be a car accident in the area near Caison Road. Also, the buses have now worked through many of the beginning of the year challenges so if you would like to request a morning bus stop you can do so by calling the Transportation Department at 336-378-6445.

The week we want to send a huge thank you to all our parents and families that have participated in the Cash for Colts PTO Fundraiser. This is the PTO’s main funding source and we greatly appreciate all the support that our PTO provides to our school. Please see information about ways to still contribute to Cash for Colts in this newsletter.

This week our Kindergarten students will have a visit from Gus the Bus and then later this week on Friday they will take their first field trip! Also, our 3 rd  graders will take the Cog-At Abilities Test on Wed.-Fri. We hope that all families that are new to Oak Ridge Elementary (moving here for the 2019-2020 school year) will join the New Family Cookout at Oak Ridge Town Park on Thursday afternoon/night. Please see additional information about the New Family Cookout in this newsletter. The Science Fair will soon be here, and we want parents and students to start thinking about their interest in participating in this year’s Science Fair. More information about the Science Fair and how to enter a project will be shared with all students on Monday, Oct. 7 th . A couple of additional dates for October – please remember that Wednesday, Oct. 9 th  and Monday Oct. 28 th  are Teacher Workdays and the school will be closed to students on these two days.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs. Francisco
FINAL CASH FOR COLTS UPDATE!

We are nearing the end of our Cash For Colts fundraiser. The LAST DAY TO DONATE IS MONDAY and we are SOOOO very close to making our goal of $23,500! If you have already donated, a big THANK YOU for all your support.  If you haven't already donated, please consider doing so now on our website Donations will be accepted through Monday night.

All tickets will be distributed to the appropriate child by Wednesday. Please make sure that your child puts them in the box of their choice for their prize. The boxes will be out all Thursday for any last minute tickets! The drawing will be Friday, October 4th live on the morning show. There will be class prizes for the class with the highest total (current leaders are Mrs Dixon, Mrs Snipes, Mrs Brendle, Mrs Price and Mr Rasch in that order) and any class who reaches 100% support regardless of amount.

All the money of this fundraiser is already earmarked for programs and events. If we don't make our goal, we will have to consider removing programs or events to make up the short fall.  Please keep the donations coming!
Calling all little performers in 4th & 5th grade!

Are you interested in acting? Singing? Being on stage? Well then, drama club is the place for you! Interested students need to should sign up here for a spot in the Colts' Drama Club. You will need to sing (unless you are already in chorus) and be prepared to deliver a monologue (if the student doesn't have one, no worries, they will be provided!). We are really excited about this new club which plans to bring a play to Oak Ridge in the Spring! Meetings will be held on Wednesday afternoons directly after school with pick up at 4pm from the car rider line with the first meeting on October 16th directly after school in Room 405. Look forward to seeing you all there!

RUNNING CLUB UPDATE

The first few weeks of running club have been going VERY well. Runners are really getting into the routine of running regularly and it's been a blast to see them working so hard towards their goals! We are also excited to announce that we are partnering with Oak Ridge Youth Association for our race at the end of the season! Oak Ridge Youth Association is an amazing local resource for children to learn, play and grow in a variety of sports and we are very excited they will be a part of our final event. Stay tuned for more info on our final race in the next few weeks!
Attention 2nd & 3rd Grade Parents!
Your Child needs Leaves!!!

In Art Classes, 2nd & 3rd grade students are learning about leaves & will soon be creating an interesting leaf composition towards a future colorful painting. These students will receive an open-ended plastic bag from their teacher  to bring in 1-5 leaves  of their choosing to use in their composition. Leaves should be dry, flat & in good shape! An interesting shape & visible veins are the key,  not color since students will be realistically drawing these leaves & veins & then choosing their own colors when they paint.  Students should return their bag of 1 to 5 leaves to the leaf collection box in their classroom, by the next Art class after receiving their collection box from Ms. Hodnett!

Fifth-Grade Scarf Weaving begins in Art in early November!!

All 5th grade students will need to have their own ball of yarn* (at least a 5 - 7 1/2 ounces package) wound into a ball, & brought to Art class by the end of October! Any color, color blend is acceptable! However, NO baby yarn or thin string-like yarn, please! Thicker yarns are so much easier to weave and less likely to tangle during the weaving process.

Some common brands are  Red Heart ,  Lion Brand ,  Caron ,  Bernat , which you could find at Wal Mart or Michaels, but it doesn’t have to be one of those brands or come from those stores. It can even be yarn that you already have at home!   Each student’s package of yarn must be wound into a ball prior to our November class , even if the package looks like a ball-ish shape! All fifth-graders will be taught how to wind yarn into a ball in Art class multiple times. Thank you for supporting your child in this highly-anticipated annual project!!!

*If this presents a hardship for any family, please let me or their classroom teacher know and yarn will be provided privately for them to take home and wind into a ball.

Any Questions: Email Ms. Hodnett at  hodnets@gcsnc.com

Don't forget our fabulous school store is open EVERY FRIDAY from 7:20am-7:40am. Come and shop!
