Sarah Smith, DNP
Sarah Smith, DNP, has joined Huntsville Family Health Center as a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with 17 years of advanced practice experience. She cares for infants, children, and adolescents and brings a strong background in primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, and Level III NICU care.

Along with routine checkups and sick visits, she also helps families navigate concerns such as ADHD, behavior changes, emotional health, and development. Her approach reflects the understanding that a child’s physical, mental, and emotional health all matter and work together.

A Simple Appointment That Changed Everything
This reflection is a composite inspired by real patient experiences. Details have been changed to protect privacy.
---
Jennifer is 50 and has always been the kind of person who handles things as they come. If something needs attention, she takes care of it. If not, she keeps moving. That easygoing mindset had worked well for her.
So when her primary care provider recommended a mammogram during a routine visit, she scheduled it and thought no more of it.
That appointment led to something she never saw coming: a breast cancer diagnosis.
Looking back, what stays with Jennifer most is the feeling that comes when things quickly change. What felt like such a simple step ended up mattering more than she could have known. She now thinks about how easily that appointment could have been put off, and how much it mattered that it was not.
Today, she is cancer-free.
“It all felt so unexpected, and I’m just so thankful I went,” she says. “It made me realize those visits and screenings are recommended for a reason. Keeping them really can save your life.”

Breast & Cervical Cancer Screenings: We’re Here to Help
|
A Stronger Focus on Women’s Preventive Care
We are strengthening our efforts to help more women in our community get the breast and cervical cancer screenings they need.
Making Screenings Easier to Understand and Access
This work is part of our ongoing commitment to women’s health and in partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health. Our goal is to help women stay up to date on important screenings and get support along the way.
Insurance or No Insurance, Ask Us
Most insurance plans cover mammograms and Pap smears. If you do not have insurance, you may qualify to receive these screenings at no cost.
How We Help
Our care teams are here to make the process feel easier to understand and easier to manage. We can help patients:
- understand what screenings may be due
- talk through questions or concerns
- connect to available services
- navigate next steps with respectful, compassionate support
Take the Next Step for Your Health
At your next visit, ask your provider if you are due for a mammogram or Pap smear. You can also ask a member of our care team what options may be available, even if you do not have insurance.

Community
Community Spotlight ♥️
| |
At the heart of our mission is a simple belief: every person deserves access to healthcare delivered with respect, compassion, and dignity. That belief recently took our staff beyond our clinic walls and into the community, where we had the privilege of serving at First Stop, a Huntsville nonprofit helping neighbors experiencing homelessness move toward greater stability.
First Stop meets people where they are, offering outreach, meals, basic needs, case management, and connections to helpful resources. We are grateful for the chance to work alongside organizations making a meaningful difference in our community.

Seasonal Allergies

Spring allergies can make you feel miserable with sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose, and congestion. The good news is that a few simple steps can help lower your symptoms.
What you can do:
- Take your allergy medicine as directed.
- Keep windows closed at home and in the car.
- Shower after spending time outside to wash pollen off your skin and hair.
- Use saline spray or steam to help clear your nose.
- Try to spend less time outside on high-pollen or windy days.
When to see your primary care provider:
- Your symptoms are not getting better.
- You are not sure if it is allergies or something else.
- You have fever, body aches, wheezing, or trouble breathing.
- Allergies are disrupting sleep, school, work, or daily life.
If spring allergies are slowing you or your child down, talk with your primary care provider. We can help you find the right treatment and relief.
