Advocacy Updates
With the New York State and City budget negotiations underway and critical federal programs under threat, New Destiny continues to stand firmly in its commitment to expand and protect housing resources for survivors of domestic violence.
In response to the federal funding threats, our team joined hundreds of other advocates at the Supportive Housing Network of NY’s “Hands off Housing” rally in New York City on March 21. Nicole Branca, our Chief Executive Officer, delivered inspiring remarks on how housing saves lives.
| | At the state level, Nicole and our Director of Policy and Communications, Gabriela Sandoval Requena, continue to advocate to increase funding for the state’s oldest supportive housing program, the New York State Supportive Housing Program, or NYSSHP. Gabriela traveled to Albany with the Family Homelessness Coalition to ensure that the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP) gets implemented. HAVP would create a statewide rental subsidy available to all eligible New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status. Additionally, Gabriela joined the Just Pay Campaign, advocating for a 7.8% contract rate increase for all nonprofit human services workers. | In New York City, Gabriela testified at 5 City Council hearings on the FY26 preliminary budget. Daniris Espinal, member of our Survivor Voices Project, and Maria Rodriguez, member of Voces De Cambio, testified alongside Gabriela at 2 of the hearings. “My name is Pamela Alston, and I am the Porter for The Corden and The Jennings in the Bronx. I like working for New Destiny because I'm big on helping when I can, and I love that they are helping families.
When I'm off the clock, I like playing NBA 2K on my Play Station 5. Additionally, I'm very family oriented and enjoy spending all my spare time with my family. I especially value trips to Chuck E. Cheese and quality time spent with my son, who I am very passionate about.”
