Teas of Guangxi & Hubei
This month we are going wrap up our excursion throughout the tea-producing provinces in China and we are visiting Guangxi and Hubei.
Guangxi is a province located on the southern coast of China. It is nestled between Yunnan to the west and Guangdong to the east, with Guizhou on its northwest border and Hunan on its northeast border. Tea gardens are scattered throughout the province, but there are concentrations of them in the northeast around Liu Bao Village, in the west in Ling Yun County, and in the north in Sanjiang County near Guilin's Tea Science and Research Institute. Elevations and climate where the tea is grown tends to be varied, depending on if it is grown in the mountainous north or in the south where the elevation is around sea level. Even though Guangxi is not among the top producers of tea in China, the province produces black, green, dark, and a little of the rare yellow tea.
The most notable tea that hails from Guangxi is Liu Bao Hei Cha (Dark Tea). This tea has a history of production that spans over one thousand years in Liubao Village in the eastern part of the province. Liu Bao undergoes a post-fermentation process that yields the distinctive earthy taste of dark teas, and it is this process of tea production that was "borrowed" by tea producers in Yunnan to begin making Shou Pu-er in the 1970s. An aged version of this tea from 2002 is offered in my menu and it is produced from wild-growing trees. My menu also offers a black tea from this region, Golden Curls.

Our last stop on our China tour is in the Hubei Province, which is a landlocked province that is surrounded by several tea-producing provinces. Hubei is a picturesque landscape that consists of high mountain ranges, valleys, rivers and many lakes. In fact, Hubei is known as "the province of a thousand lakes". There is an extensive history of tea here in the area, with references extending back thousands of years. It is believed that this is the birthplace of Emperor Shennong, who is considered to be the Father of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Agriculture, as well as being credited with discovering tea. The Tea Sage, Lu Yu, was also born and lived here in the sixth century AD.
Hubei experiences a humid subtropical climate and the mountainous areas where tea is grown benefit from mist that protects the plants. In terms of production, Hubei usually falls within the top five of China's provinces. Many high quality black, green and dark teas are produced here, but not much is making it here to the US market. It is possible that these teas are making it to our market, but they are just not labeled as such. Unfortunately I do not offer any teas from Hubei (not for lack of trying), but felt it important to include these teas in our exploration because of the province's historical significance and that it does produce a significant amount of tea. The teas from En Shi County, which are usually green teas, are particularly notable and worth trying if you happen upon them.
Even though my selection is limited to two teas from Guangxi Province, these two excellent quality teas will not disappoint. They can be found in the online shop https://www.pleasuresoftea.com. To easily find them, type Guangxi in the search box or the name of the tea. Each tea will have a description about where and how the tea is grown, cultivar information and/or aromatic and taste profiles. Enjoy the last leg of your "travels" to China and feel free to share your experience! :)
