Dear Friend,
Parishes are an important ministry of the Jesuits here on the East Coast. They serve people from Maine to Georgia, ministering in at least two languages, English and Spanish (and sometimes others.) They have community centers or parochial schools attached to them. They run spiritual direction formation programs and community outreach programs. They are located in both poor and also in more affluent neighborhoods.
Pope Francis invites us this month to pray for parishes. He states that parishes should be “schools of service and generosity.” What an Ignatian desire! In my experience, service and generosity are at the heart of the Ignatian experience. Not only because they appear multiple times in the text of the Exercises, but because they come from the personal encounter with Jesus who calls us to love him and to follow him every day.
So, with Francis, we pray for the 18 parishes of our Province. May they continue to be communities of faith, solidarity, and of welcoming the most in need.
