SPOTLIGHT: Supporting Low-Income, First-Generation Students
According to the Center for First-Generation Student Success, as of the 2015–16 school year, 56 percent of all undergraduates were first-generation students (neither parent held a bachelor’s degree). The Higher Education Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, also reported that about half of first-generation students are also from low-income families. This means there are many low-income, first-generation (LIFG) college students in public, private nonprofit, and private for-profit colleges and universities. And, when taking a closer look, among the LIFG population of students, there is also an overrepresentation of women of color within this student population. As institutions of higher education serve LIFG students, there are resources available to support them.

SPOTLIGHT: Latinx Higher Education Student Success
According to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), Latinx students make up a steadily growing percentage of undergraduate students in the United States, with 3.4 million Hispanic undergraduate students enrolled in all postsecondary institutions in 2020-21. Hispanic enrollment in higher education is expected to exceed 4.1 million students by 2026, far surpassing the growth rate of any other racial-ethnic group. The percent of STEM degrees conferred to Hispanic students rose from 9.2 to 14 percent between 2009 and 2018. Hispanic students earned 25 percent of associate degrees conferred in 2020, compared to 13 percent in 2011. Hispanic students earned 15 percent of bachelor's degrees conferred in 2020, compared to 9 percent in 2011. As more Latinx students enter college, there are many culturally responsive supports and programs institutions of higher education can implement to support the success of Latinx students.

About NCSSLE's Higher Education e-Digest

The National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments Higher Education e-Digest addresses campus and community engagement, health, safety, and security. Regular contents include new resources from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and other federal partner agencies and field organizations, examples of effective field practices, and relevant learning opportunities. The Higher Education e-Digest also highlights NCSSLE resources and the availability of ongoing services, including technical assistance, products, and tools.
