O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
(Collect for the Third Sunday in Easter, BCP p. 224)
Last Sunday’s Gospel foreshadowed this Sunday’s Collect. We know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. One of the foremost Anglican scholars of liturgy last century was an Anglican Benedictine monk named Dom Gregory Dix. His book, “The Shape of the Liturgy,” was instrumental in the development of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Though some of the ends of his research are now contested, the gist of his argument is now a common Anglican phrase: The shape of the liturgy is cruciform in four points and its culmination is the Eucharist, where bread is taken, blessed, broken, and shared.
The communion with one another in our act of taking, blessing, breaking, and sharing the Body of Christ is a moment in which we stand together with Jesus at the cross. There, we share in the restoration of all things with all the saints who ever were and who will ever come to be. In so doing, we both act as the Body of Christ in the world and receive his Body, bread taken from our gifts that is blessed, broken, and shared. We are then to share that grace when we leave the church, distributed to the world. It is mystery and grace.
I like the concept of Taking, Blessing, Breaking, and Sharing. It really underlies all that we do as Church. Your generosity is blessed and shared, amplifying your gift by orders of magnitude. It becomes much greater than it could possibly have been on its own, unshared. I see it in the life of this parish, and I see it in the capital campaign plans that are now coming to fruition. Your faithfulness in gift has been taken, God is blessing it, and we will soon be sharing the wealth of grace from that blessing with one another and Newport.
After we have taken, blessed, broke, and shared the Eucharist at Sunday’s 10am service, you will have an opportunity to participate in the further blessing of phase 1 of our capital campaign, the kitchen renovation. The money you have offered has been taken and the cabinets for our kitchen renovation are being ordered. We’d like you to participate in the blessing by helping choose the finishings for the cabinetry. We will have choices on hand and taking your comments and preferences on what you believe is the best finish for the parish kitchen, which will be completed later this summer, depending on supply chain circumstances.
Thank you for your faithful gifts, they are a blessing and are being multiplied and blessed for the future use of the parish and the Newport community. May others come to know Christ in the breaking of the bread at Trinity, both at our Eucharist and fresh-baked out of our kitchen, soon to be completed and shared. See you Sunday!
Be Well,
Tim+

This Sunday, May 1st, during the coffee hour after the 10:00 am service, there will be an exhibit of potential cabinet finishing and floor material for the new Honyman Hall kitchen.
We need your input on the final cabinet design and finishing, as well as the floor coverings.
There will be samples on display from which you can select your preference.
This is the final step prior to ordering the cabinets!
