The Narthex

A few weeks ago, I tried to translate the word “narthex” into Spanish and discovered some very interesting facts. I had always translated it as “Atrio” (Atrium), but then I found out that they are actually two different things. The atrium is an outer courtyard, while the narthex is an inner vestibule, both commonly found in basilicas. The narthex serves as an entryway that bridges the sacred interior of a church with the outside world, evolving over time to reflect theological and cultural needs.

The word "narthex" comes from Greek, originally meaning “scourge” or “reed.” In early Christianity, it was the designated area for catechumens—those preparing for baptism—who were not yet permitted to enter the main sanctuary. It also served as a gathering place for penitents who were temporarily excluded from full participation in the Eucharist. (Side note: We discussed this briefly in our Monday Bible Study at 7 p.m!)

During Christianity’s early centuries, persecution forced believers to worship in secret. When Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in the 4th century, basilicas were constructed, and the narthex became a key architectural feature. These early churches had distinct areas: the narthex (vestibule), the nave (where the congregation gathered), and the sanctuary (where the altar stood).

The narthex serves both practical and symbolic purposes. As a transitional space, it prepares individuals before they enter the sacred area. Symbolically, it represents the threshold of faith, often serving as the site for baptisms, marking the journey from the secular to the sacred. In the past, penitents and seekers stood in the narthex as they acknowledged their need for spiritual renewal.

Throughout the medieval period, the narthex continued to be a space of distinction, often adorned with frescoes and mosaics depicting biblical themes. It was also a gathering place for processions, funerals, and special blessings before entering the nave.

In modern church architecture, the narthex retains many of its historical roles while adapting to contemporary needs. It is often used for welcoming visitors, distributing bulletins, and preparing for worship. Many churches, including ours, also use it as a space for social interaction before and after services, reinforcing its function as a transitional area that both prepares the faithful for worship and sends them forth into the world.

Different Christian traditions interpret and use the narthex in unique ways. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, it plays a pronounced liturgical role, serving as a place for specific rites and prayers. In Anglican churches, it is primarily a functional space but still retains its symbolic importance as a bridge between the outside world and the sacred.

I now realize that the narthex is much more than just an entryway—it carries deep theological and historical significance. From its early use as a space for catechumens and penitents to its modern role as a welcoming area, it continues to symbolize the journey of faith, guiding worshippers from the world outside into the presence of God.

Is there another part of our church building that interests you? Would you like to learn more about why we have certain spaces or why we observe certain practices? Let me know!

With love, Javier

James reminds us that true religion is shown in how we treat others, especially the most vulnerable.

OUR CALL TO CREATION CARE WITH SACRED GROUNDS!

As a congregation, we took a stand last year for our Sacred Grounds by attending educational workshops about native plants, by pledging to plant native plants in our yards. These activities were made possible by the Sacred Grounds Grant we received through the National Wildlife Federation. We are now approaching our final segment of this grant. You can find more information at https://www.nwf.org/Home/SacredGrounds.

This year, we are offering several other exciting opportunities for us to care for God’s Creation. Many people started planting a few native plants in their garden last spring and now want to do more.

1.     The National Wildlife Federation Virtual Workshop!

The National Wildlife Federation is hosting a Zoom workshop for our Sacred Grounds congregations (Ascension and four other Gaithersburg churches) called “How to Garden with Native Plants (Advanced).” Everyone is welcome. The topics are:

·      Why we need to expand our garden with native plants

·      “Bringing Nature Home” Garden Kits and plant information

·      Garden designs for shady and sunny native plants

·      How to prepare your garden bed and maintain it after planting

·      Financial support for Montgomery County residents

Join us virtually on Thursday, February 27th, 2025, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM to learn from experts about how to care for native plants.

You may register and receive the zoom link here: https://bit.ly/HowtoGarden.

2.     The Understory Garden Planting, Dedication, and “Bringing Nature Home” Kits Give Away!

The youth and children of Church of the Ascension will be working together to place the understory plants in our newly prepared garden facing Frederick Avenue. Please join us on Sunday, April 27th at 4:00 PM. There will be a short dedication service after the planting is completed. We will also be giving away the native plant kits to the pledgers. All are welcome!

3.     Earth Service and Starter Kit Give Away 2025!

Please join your fellow congregation members in Caring for Creation by planting native plants at home. Ascencion members will have another opportunity this year to make a pledge to receive free native plants for your own gardens. The plant Give Away will be on Sunday, May 4th after the 10:00 AM Earth service.

Native plants provide food for birds and butterflies, as well as other wildlife, and they flourish easily with minimal care. Native plants also filter the water from our yards that flows into nearby streams and rivers, thus helping to protect these waterways from pollution and flooding.

You can start small with three plants which could be planted in your yard or in pots. You may make a pledge by clicking on the following link: www.nwf.org/NativePlantPledge

🕖 Hora: 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
