Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear Hermosa Beach City School District Families,

We continue to see a growing number of students riding bikes and e-bikes to and from Hermosa Valley School. As a reminder, as a part of the HBCSD "Be Safe, Be SMART" campaign, all students riding an e-bike or e-scooter MUST participate in a safety training and earn a registration sticker prior to utilizing the e-bike/scooter to come to school. Active transportation can be a great way for students to get to school, and we appreciate families encouraging safe and healthy ways to travel.

However, we are also seeing a significant rise in bike and e-bike riders utilizing the sidewalks when arriving at and leaving our campuses. Additionally, we are witnessing a number of families with e-bikes riding between vehicles in the drop-off area. Riding on sidewalks creates safety concerns for pedestrians, younger students, and families walking near our schools and maneuvering around traffic poses an even greater risk for the riders and drivers.

To help address this issue and reinforce safe riding practices, we have asked the Hermosa Beach Police Department to increase their presence in and around our campuses during arrival and dismissal times. Riders who are observed operating bikes or e-bikes on sidewalks may be cited and/or referred to allcove Beach Cities for retraining and diversion programming focused on safe riding practices.

We encourage families to review proper riding expectations with their students. Our district has created a collection of bike and e-bike safety videos and guidance to support these conversations. Please take a few minutes to review them together by visiting our E-Bike Safety Tips - Videos webpage.

By working together—families, students, the school district, and our local police department—we can ensure that students who ride to school do so safely and responsibly while protecting everyone in our school community.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our campuses safe.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal on Tuesday, March 17, to provide three years of funding for existing allcove centers across Los Angeles County. 1. Go to the County's public e-comment form.
  2. Select "In Favor" for Agenda Item 14: Improving the Mental Health of Los Angeles County's Youth.
  3. Add your comment. You can use this suggested text: "I'm in favor and support funding allcove Beach Cities and improving the mental health of our young people."

Please note that public comments entered into the portal (up to 8,000 characters) will become part of the official record.

Parenting in a Digital World Tip #20: Managing Minecraft

This tip comes from Common Sense Media.

Minecraft's open-ended nature with no built-in stopping points makes time management especially challenging. It's easy for kids of all ages to lose track of how long they've been playing, which often creates a struggle to transition away from the game because there's always "just one more thing" to do.

Check out this Parents’ Ultimate Guide to Minecraft.

Hermosa View School Principal News

I had such a great time watching our very own students playing at Clark Field on Friday in the Hermosa Beach Little League. It makes me so proud to see them playing on a team, learning the importance of working hard, and having fun! On top of that, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade made me feel so very thankful to be part of such an amazing community. What an honor it is to be your principal.

This week, our Kindergarteners will go on a walking field trip to the Hermosa Beach Police Station and Fire Department. Report cards will be emailed home on Friday, and we will end the week with a View Flag Assembly, honoring students who have been Respectful at Hermosa View. Please join us on the blacktop by entering through the gate past the North Gate. We are so proud of our students for following our SURF Expectations (Safe, Up for a Challenge, Respectful, and Friendly)!

The HVPTO's HVS Dolphin Dash Jog-A-Thon is coming to our campus on Thursday, March 26. Please consider signing up your student to participate. We rely so much on this fundraiser to support important programs like our lunch clubs and field trips for our students. We also need volunteers for the event. Please sign up if you can help us out. Thank you so much for your continued support and generosity.

As an arrival times reminder, 1st graders must be on the blacktop and on their spots ready to go no later than 8:30 AM. TK and Kinder students must be in class no later than 8:40 AM. If you arrive at or after these times, your child will be marked late. Thank you for teaching our students healthy and responsible habits at an early age.

Here’s to a great week ahead!

Warmly,

Dr. Jessica Ghobrial, Hermosa View Principal / HB Preschool Director

We had many fun and exciting activities during the second trimester. As we move into the third trimester, please take a moment to review playground rules and expectations with your child, especially those related to the soccer field. To help keep everyone safe, please remind students to keep their hands down, throw the ball in when it goes out of bounds rather than kicking it, and avoid slide tackling. Our goal is to ensure that all students stay safe while enjoying their time at recess. It’s important for our students to enjoy fun activities at recess, and it can be helpful to have conversations with them about how to participate safely.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming HVPTO's HVS Dolphin Dash Jog-A-Thon on Wednesday, March 25, at our school. This is always a fun event for our students and an important fundraiser that helps support programs and activities across our schools. We encourage students to participate and welcome parents and guardians to sign up to volunteer and help make the event a success. Thank you for your continued support of our Hermosa Schools community!

Warmly,

Grace Yang, Hermosa Vista Principal

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our Valley School Band and Middle School Student Council at last week’s Swing into Spring with The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra Concert. Special thanks to the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club for helping make this memorable evening possible. It was truly an experience to remember for so many of our students and community members.

Last week, we also celebrated a fantastic HVS Winter Sports Award Ceremony, honoring a season of dedication and teamwork. This winter, 218 student-athletes participated in 93 events, supported by 19 coaches and 10 volunteers. A huge thank you to our HVS Athletic Director, Coach Vasquez, and HVPTO for your unwavering support of HVS Athletics.

Our 5th graders had an amazing trip to the California Science Center last week! Students explored interactive exhibits, learned about space, ecosystems, and engineering, and got a close-up look at how sports interact with the human body, including muscles, motion, and performance. It was a fun and inspiring day full of hands-on science and exploration.

Spring sports tryouts begin Monday, March 16. This season, students can participate in boys volleyball, girls flag football, boys and girls track and field, and boys & girls surf. Later this year, the HVS Cheer Team will hold its 2026-2027 school year tryouts. Stay tuned for more news about our exciting Spring season!

This week, we kick off the Valley Scholar Quiz, and we have a record number of student sign-ups. Students are eager to show off their knowledge across topics ranging from mathematics and geography to sports and pop culture. Check out the Scholar Quiz - Study Hut Tutoring video to learn more about this incredible program brought to us by Study Hut.

We are looking for parent volunteers to help make our Scholar Quiz run smoothly. If you have time during lunch next week and are willing to help with logistics or serve as a flag judge, please consider signing up. With this many students participating, a few extra adults will help ensure everything runs smoothly.

A reminder that Redondo Union High School counselors will be visiting campus on Monday, March 16, to meet with our 8th grade students who will be attending RUHS in the fall. We are excited to get those conversations started. They will be freshmen before we know it.

Finally, we are highly encouraging our students to participate in the HVPTO's HVS Dolphin Dash Jog-A-Thon at Valley on Friday, March 27. We would love your help building momentum for this event. Even one donation or pledge per student can make a huge difference to our school programs. Plus, they have great incentives & prizes!

Thank you for your continued support of our students and community!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
