Making a Difference During

Affordable Housing Month

May is Affordable Housing Month, and perhaps never before has our nation's housing crisis been felt so deeply.

How serious a challenge is it? Consider that in the U.S. today, there are only 35 affordable rental homes for every 100 extremely low-income renter households - representing a shortage of 7.1 million affordable rental homes nationwide. These effects will only worsen as our country's population ages and more seniors struggle to make ends meet.

Locally, the high cost of real estate cannot be overlooked. Since many seniors rely solely on income from social security and pensions, it's not unusual for some seniors to spend half of their income or more on housing.

At Fellowship Square, we are keenly aware of these challenges, and we continue to advocate for affordable housing for seniors while also providing affordable housing opportunities in the area for seniors.

What can we do? Make a difference this year by supporting Fellowship Square through donations, volunteerism, or education! We rely on individuals, foundations, corporations and congregations to cover costs to support programs and services for residents and help keep seniors engaged physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Stay Sharp!

Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, especially for seniors. As people age, they often face unique challenges such as retirement, loss of loved ones, and physical health issues, which can significantly impact their mental health. Depression and anxiety are common among seniors, but these conditions are often underdiagnosed and underrated.

It's important for seniors to have access to mental health resources and support systems, including counseling, social activities, and medical care. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and staying socially connected can also help improve mental health and reduce feelings of isolation. A recent article, in fact, highlighted social activities as one of the strongest components of healthy aging, and at Fellowship Square, we are committed to providing a robust calendar with programs and activities that appeal to all residents and provide the connections they need to keep their minds active.

We rely on people like you to help make Fellowship House a great place to live and access a variety of activities designed for seniors.

Check out our current calendar of volunteer opportunities – and take a look at the many programs and activities our seniors can take advantage of. I’d love to see you at our next event!

Volunteer Profile

Giving Back with BF Saul

Over the last year, employees from B.F. Saul Company Hospitality Group have been enthusiastically volunteering with residents of the Hunters Woods Fellowship House, engaging with both residents and staff. Together, they participated in the Easter Brunch Social and regularly help out with the Fellowship Fresh Food Distribution at Hunters Woods. This month, we sat down with Soo Kim, assistant general manager for B.F. Saul, to find out more about the company’s important investment of time in Fellowship Square.

Q: What has inspired BF Saul to volunteer with Fellowship Square?

A: We are in the hospitality business, where it’s all about creating new connections and people taking care of people. We welcomed this opportunity to give back to our community through volunteering our time and efforts and to meet new people with diverse background and life experiences. It helps us view life through a different lens.

Q: What has been your favorite part of being a volunteer?

A: We really enjoy meeting new people and love seeing that our small gestures bring them joy. That, in turn, helps us become better versions of our selves. Our experience with Fellowship Square has helped us develop new skills, improve leadership, and build team work. We also love working with Service Coordinator Jane Kung – she has made this experience more enjoyable!

Q: How did you hear about Fellowship Square?

A: On www.justserve.org: We spent a few hours comparing different organizations, and we wanted to ensure that we partnered with one that shares the same values. That led us to Fellowship Square!

Q: What do you hope to gain from volunteering?

A: More compassion and a deeper understanding by creating new connections with the residents and leaders of the Hunters Woods Fellowship House. Our goal is to brighten someone’s day by being present, listening having conversations. We feel fortunate that we have been given the opportunity to connect with residents and gain a sense of purpose through small gestures of kindness.

Fellowship Fresh Program Honored by Commonwealth Council

Kristin Norris, Fellowship Square's Board of Directors president (second from left), recently accepted the First Place Award from the Commonwealth Council of Aging during the Virginia Governors Conference on Aging in Williamsburg, VA, in recognition of our Fellowship Fresh Program.

Fellowship Fresh works to ensure our residents have access to shelf-stable, nutrient-rich food via our partnerships with Capital Area Food Bank, Cornerstones, and so many other community partners and volunteers. In 2024, our Fellowship Fresh Program received 58,196 pounds of food, representing $147,132 of in-kind donations.

We're honored by this recognition of this valuable program and feel so grateful for the 50 volunteers, each working an average of 20 hours every month, to make it possible!

A Timeline of Growth

As we celebrate our 65th Anniversary, it's always important to look back and see how far we've come. As this timeline of growth illustrates, it's no wonder that Fellowship Square has been so effective at fostering independence for a growing number of our community's seniors!
