Fleeing Government Schools, Ballot Recommendations, Colorado Springs Examines Trash, and More!

  • Here are some of the stories we are following this week. Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for up-to-the-minute news.

  • Someone in town is putting large “expired” bumper stickers on expired vehicle license plates they see. Is this vandalism, or vigilantism?

  • The 2025 election is just around the corner. Ballots are in the mail, and you should see yours soon. This news article highlights some key dates to remember and also details what you can expect to see on your ballot.

  • Our friends at Free State Colorado have published a list of ballot recommendations for the coming election. Brandon Wark at Free State also produced a video discussion on these initiatives.

  • If you are in El Paso County, here is a list of choices that will be on our ballot. Remember, Propositions LL and MM are two statewide tax increase initiatives. Do you think the state collects enough from you in taxes and fees already?

  • Propositions LL and MM are tax increases that are strictly targeted to plug the gap in the “free” school lunch program for all. This program is a very expensive way to prove that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

  • Proponents of Propositions LL and MM state that free lunches make children more attentive and eager to attend school. Despite this claim, studies are showing that school attendance is down from previous years.

  • A new Common Sense Institute report details how funding for government schools keeps growing, even though enrollment keeps shrinking. Where do you think the money is actually going if it’s not going to students?
  • Denver taxpayers are predicted to save $18.5 million thanks to illegal immigrants leaving the Denver Public School District. The district is panicking due to its ever-dwindling enrollment numbers and budget allocation.

  • Also in Denver, the city is contracting with organizations that make a profit off of the urban camper problem. One company is from San Francisco, where the vagrant problem is rampant and always growing. Sounds like a ticking time bomb to us.

  • We attended the virtual Wasteless COS Waste Diversion Meeting this week and recorded the meeting for you. This effort hopes to eliminate trash in our region. We suspect plans will follow, based on the input from the whopping 27 attendees. Will this be a garbage initiative for Colorado Springs taxpayers?

  • Colorado Springs Utilities customers, who initially purchased solar to help reduce their electric bills, were targeted for a rate increase despite their solar purchase. It turns out, they may yet avoid a fee increase.

  • Colorado Springs Utilities released its proposed 2026 budget this week. Surprisingly, to no one, this proposed budget is a 23% increase over last year’s budget. The ratchet only goes one way, folks.

  • The Colorado Springs Fire Department may have to eliminate the planned 2026 Training Academy due to budget cuts within the city. CSFD has not canceled a Training Academy since 2008.

  • Former City Councilman Bill Murray predicts the Space Command move will have an economic impact on Colorado Springs. His op-ed states, "Historical patterns included increased vacancies and foreclosures when major employers left the region." Do you agree with his assessment?

  • A former state senator has been found guilty of misusing campaign funds. Next, former Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis will face felony charges of attempting to influence a public servant. People like Ms. Lewis make the laws you are forced to live by.

  • Colorado prisons are overflowing into county jails. This problem is nothing new. Do you think the solution lies in building more prisons in Colorado?

  • All summer, we were told how the state is running out of other people’s money. This crisis even led to a special session. Why then does Colorado have enough taxpayer money to not only continue taxpayer subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles, but also to increase those subsidies substantially?

  • You can also support Springs Taxpayers United when you shop. Springs Taxpayers United is now enrolled with the King Soopers Community Rewards Program. You can link your SooperCard to us by logging into your account and designating Springs Taxpayers United (SW470) as the recipient of the community reward for your King Soopers card. Here are some upcoming meetings in the area. We hope you can attend one or more! If there are other public meetings you’d like to see announced here, please drop us a line. We are happy to include them in an upcoming newsletter. These might be government-related, candidate, or elected official meetings. Thanks!

Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Since most of the City and County board and commission meetings are not televised or recorded, we are trying to remedy that. We now have a camera and a tripod for volunteers to check out for future meetings.
