June 2024 Newsletter

There is a lot to celebrate in June!

June is Pride and National Indigenous month. However, we believe that the celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ and Indigenous peoples should not be contained to one month. We should celebrate at all times!

June is Pride and also National Indigenous History Month. The shared timing of Pride and National Indigenous History Month is a good reminder to acknowledge the many intersectional identities in our community.

A common two spirit flag was designed by 2Sanon and submitted to ask-pride-color-schemes on December 17, 2016. The two feathers represent woman and man, and the circle represents unity in one identity, encompassing masculine and feminine spirits. This beautiful symbol is rooted in Indigenous culture and celebrates the beauty of gender diversity, sexuality, and spirituality. As an umbrella term, Two-Spirit encompasses LGBTQIA+ identities within Indigenous communities.

National Indigenous Day

For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

This year's theme is qatᶿɛnxegəs (qats-sun-wheegus), which means to unite or come together.

CONNECT HER: WOMEN IN SKILLED TRADES

GECO is working with Fanshawe College CTS and other organizations across Canada on a project called Connect HER. The Goal of this project is to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, education, connections, and knowledge related to creating and fostering a more supportive workplace for women and gender diverse people in skilled trades.

Stay tuned for more information related to this project.

GECO presented at the CCWESTT conference in Victoria, BC on the award-winning model igniteHER: Women in Technology and on the project that we are currently working on called Connect HER: Women in skilled trades. We talked specifically about how the future of women in trade is related to the fifth wave of feminism!

Activism - Queer Momentum

This month, and every month, GECO will continue to fight transphobia and hate by taking part in local activism and counter protests related to trans hate. This is an important part of our work. GECO advocates for equality for all genders. Too often, trans and queer folks and communities feel left out of gender and feminist movements because of a history of exclusion. We are fighting for the fifth wave of feminism, one that is intentionally inclusive of all genders, sexes, and sexualities.
