Volume 9, Issue 12 | December 27, 2023

2023 has come to an end, and we could not be prouder of all we accomplished together this year.

From our student competitions and staff recognitions to expanded literacy partnerships and innovative college and career collaborations, we have made incredible strides to support our students, staff and community at large.

All the growth we have made would not have been possible without the support of our committed community partners, enthusiastic educators, dedicated administrators and determined students.

As we bid farewell to 2023, please take time for rest and reflection. I am eager to welcome you all back in the New Year, and I am inspired to see what more we can achieve in 2024.

In partnership,

Ted Alejandre

County Superintendent

Connecting Families through Love for Literacy

SBCSS and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) Community Service & Reentry Division have partnered together to create the uplifting program, Love for Literacy.

The program was developed to provide families impacted by incarceration the opportunity to interact and connect with their children through one-on-one literacy activities.

This month, participants were delighted by a surprise visitor, Santa Claus! Santa brought literacy gifts and toys for the children, who were excited to unwrap their presents with their loved ones. It was a special moment that families enjoyed together despite the unfortunate circumstances.

The Love for Literacy program has helped foster healthy family relationships in unconventional settings but has improved literacy skills of both children and adult participants.

SALSA Heats Up Annual Winter Luncheon

The San Bernardino County Association of Leaders in School Administration (SALSA) hosted its Annual Winter Luncheon on Dec. 6 at Thinkwise Credit Union.

During the event, attendees were updated on student scholarships and legislation while enjoying an amazing Mexican-themed lunch served by SBCSS executive cabinet members.

Through generous donations and tips from staff and community partners, SALSA raised more than $1,000 that will go towards student scholarships.

Student Art Honored during Annual Holiday Open House

Staff, community members and San Bernardino County leaders all came together for the SBCSS Annual Holiday Open House.

During the event, County Superintendent Alejandre congratulated the Annual Holiday Artwork Contest honorees. Prior to the event, SBCSS called for original artwork to be submitted by staff members with school-aged children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, close family friends, and students from our Student Services programs.

This year, SBCSS received 51 entries. We would like to congratulate the three artists who were selected: Navanni Garcia, Nhy’el Cook and Nora Carter. Their incredible artwork is displayed on this year’s SBCSS holiday cards.
