Dear Land Trust Supporters,

We wanted you to be among the first to know that St. Simons Land Trust’s Pennies for Preservation program contributions have surpassed $1 MILLION for land preservation!

When the P4P program was launched in 2017, founding partners included the Sea Island Company, Barbara Jean’s Restaurant and Bar, The Brunswick News, Café Frederica, Delaney’s Bistro & Bar, Ember-MAS Lounge, and Sandy Bottom Bagels – all of which are still active partners today. Since then, the program has grown exponentially, resulting in a community-wide movement that today includes nearly 50 local businesses representing restaurants, retail, hospitality, media, real estate, art, and other services.
Some partners raised funds by collecting a voluntary 1% donation or dollar amount on customers’ receipts. Others did so by donating 1% of their proceeds, or by offering in-kind and discounted services to the Land Trust. No matter how the partners participated, their voluntarily donated pennies, and that of their countless patrons and clients, added up to more than $1,000,000 and have been used to help acquire and protect 80+ acres of environmentally and culturally significant land on St. Simons.

In 2021, $500,000 of P4P program contributions were used to help provide final funding on what is now the 35-acre Correll Trail at Oatland property on the north-end of St. Simons. Then, in 2023, another $300,000 were used to help purchase the nearly 10-acre Gateway Property on the south-end of the island. Signage thanking P4P participating businesses can be found at both locations. The remaining $200,000, and any additional program contributions raised in the coming months, will be used to help purchase other properties that are currently being evaluated for possible acquisition.

“While so much has been accomplished through the Pennies for Preservation program since its inception, we recognize there is still so much work to be done. In the years to come, my hope is that all local business owners will be moved by the positive impact of these donated pennies for preservation. If $1 million can be raised by 50 businesses, imagine the impact of 100 businesses or more!”
