Farewell Game Marks End of an Era
for WEB Girls Ice Hockey Seniors
On February 21st, WEB Girls Ice Hockey had their last game of the season, which was also the last game for the team's seniors, Kate, Grace, Keira and Riley.

In the last few moments of their final game together, Riley scored and had all of her fellow seniors on the ice with her at the time. The seniors and the team shared a celebratory hug over this final goal in these last few moments. It was a joyous and tearful moment! Emily O'Connor shared that "2 of the seniors (Riley Bain & Kate Carabin ) have been on this WEB team since it began. They are a special group of 4 hardworking girls, and we will miss them next year."
Also from Emily: "The WEB Family ..have truly enjoyed watching this group of seniors over the years. Go do more great things, ladies." What a great way to wrap up a season, with a senior scoring the last goal!

Historical Tidbit:
A Piece of WB Public Library History
Library use grew slowly until the Depression, when circulation of books soared. During those years of economic hardship, there was a great demand for a larger library and for more books. The popularity of the library continued to grow through the late Thirties. During the Forties, the focus of the Trustees changed. The years during World War II were hectic ones, and the Trustees took on the added responsibility of collecting books for distribution to American servicemen stationed in Europe.

In 1956, a committee as appointed by Special Town Meeting to “survey library facilities,” because once again the use of the library was hampered by its physical limitations.

The Town Meeting of November, 1960 voted the sum of $50,000 for the purpose of constructing and equipping a new public library. Construction began in 1961 and the resulting library opened its doors in September, 1992. The old library building (the Center Primary School) was sold and moved to the corner of South Main Street and Ash to house a business.

In 1980, the library was considered one of the busiest in the state. Book circulation approached 50,000 and more than 3,000 local citizens held library cards.

West Bridgewater Food Pantry Looking for Sustainers

From the West Bridgewater Food Pantry,
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our donors and community partners for their unwavering support in the past. Your generosity has been pivotal in our journey thus far. Yet, the need to rally together once more is upon us as we persist in our mission to aid the 60+ local families grappling with food insecurity.

In February 2022, we transitioned from our previous location at Spring Street School to a new home at 457R S. Main St. This move was beneficial for two key reasons: it provided the much-needed additional space and streamlined the distribution process for those we assist. However, this improvement introduced a new set of challenges, including increased overhead costs. Beyond our food expenses, we now cover rent, electricity, gas, insurance, and internet fees.

Our organization is powered entirely by volunteers who dedicate countless hours to keeping the Pantry operational. Despite our efforts in fundraising, securing grants, and receiving financial donations, our outgoings consistently surpass our income. To maintain our operations, a steady and reliable cash flow is indispensable. We find ourselves in need of further assistance.

Can you contribute to our cause? Support can come in financial form or through building connections. Perhaps you know of a business capable of becoming a sustainer, a company eager to enhance its community impact through financial support, or someone with a suitable space they're willing to donate or lease at a discounted rate. With your support, we can continue our mission to ensure that no one in West Bridgewater faces hunger. Learn more about the food pantry and how you can help at West Bridgewater Food Pantry or phone us at: (508) 510-5274

Climate Can Do: Addressing Climate Resilience through Fairtrade Chocolate

Do you love chocolate? If so, you're not alone. Americans eat 58 million pounds of chocolate during Valentine's week, lets look at some eco-friendly ways to enjoy it.

The supply of chocolate struggles with the increasing demand due to the impact of climate change on the cocoa industry.

Cocoa trees grow in humid climates and take up to a year to produce enough cocoa for half a pound of chocolate. Climate Change is a significant threat to countries around the equator, like Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast, where cocoa grows.

Sustainable cocoa farming promotes fair trade and climate-smart practices, helping farmers earn fair prices, prevent deforestation, and mitigate climate change. However, producing chocolate has a high carbon footprint due to transportation and requires over 1,180 gallons of water per pound.

You can reduce your chocolate's carbon footprint by taking simple steps:

  • Choose simple, recyclable packaging over fancy ones.
  • Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate for lower sugar content and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Buy fair trade chocolate that guarantees sustainable cocoa farming and fair payment to farmers.
  • Choose local "bean-to-bar" chocolate for quality and eco-friendliness.

Look for products with third-party certifications, like Fair Trade USA, or brands like Choceur Superberries, Chuao Chocolatier, and Bake Believe, to name a few.
