Final Boiler Update -

Thank You Steve Partlow!

We are excited that the new boiler has been installed, tested and made it through its first Sunday this past week. Steve Partlow is continuing to work with our contracted companies to get the last “bugs” out of the system, but it is up and running well and has been completely paid for! A big thank you goes to each of you for contributing so faithfully to this project. (As the temperatures will dip into the 30s this week, we are growing in gratitude!)

Also, Steve Partlow volunteers his time so faithfully to our church as the head of the property team. It needs to be said, this COULD NOT have happened without him. He was instrumental from the beginning to the end, and has done a wonderful job leading our property team through a very challenging project. From the whole St. Giles community, we want to say “Thank you Steve!”

Mark your calendars for the St. Giles Ladies Retreat, March 28-29, 2025 at Richmond Hill. Join us for a time of growing together in fellowship, worship, and prayer. More details to come!

Wednesday Night Dinner - Joe's Inn!

This week we are excited that dinner will be catered from Joe’s Inn. We will be having chicken parmesan ,spaghetti, tossed salad, and freshly made bread. We look forward to seeing everyone for dinner for Wednesday night.

As a reminder, dinner will start at 5:45 and programming will take place from 6:30-7:30. See the bottom of the email for a list of upcoming Life Groups and Sunday School options.

Hurricane Helene Suport

Often in the wake of tragedy we wonder who we can support that will directly help those most impacted. The ministries below are local in Western North Carolina and are right in the middle of caring for immediate needs and long-term recovery. These are all Christian ministries that Josh and Rebecca are familiar with and trust. If you would like to give, please consider supporting one of these organizations. (We will update this list as other needs are made available to us.) If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Josh or Rebecca.

Fall Life Groups

This Fall we have an INCREDIBLE line up of life group and Sunday school options. Please take a look at the following list and their starting dates. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Pastor Rebecca at rebecca@stgiles.org

Revival Prayer Group, Friday at 7:30-8:30 pm on Zoom

Art Thomas and Susan Herring invite others to join them for an online zoom meeting during which we will pray for God to send revival to St. Giles and the United States. We will meet on Friday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The format will include a silent time of journaling about what God is calling people to pray or is saying to the group, a time of praying aloud, and a time when the gifts of the Holy Spirit are welcome. If you are interested, please email Art at arthurdthomas333@gmail.com for a zoom invitation. You can join the zoom meeting either by internet or phone.

Donuts and Discipleship, Sundays at 9:15 – 10:15 in Youth Room

Calling all youth for a time of fellowship (with donuts!!) and studying God’s word together.

Rise Sunday School: Sundays at 9:15-10:15 in Rise Room

(Formerly the Man Cave)

This NEW ministry to our 5-6 graders will have both a Wednesday night and Sunday morning expression. Sunday morning will be led by Lindsay Sherrard as our kids dig into the Bible together to ask (and answer) some of their biggest questions. This will be both an exciting time of discipleship with snacks and games too!

Kids’ Sunday School: Sundays at 9:15-10:15

in the Kids’ Sunday School Room

All kids from grades K-4 are welcome to a fun time of discipleship and fellowship. Each morning will feature a time of age appropriate Bible Study mixed with a variety of “hands-on” art, projects, activities, and games.

Adult Class on John’s Gospel: Sundays at 9:15-10:15

in Patterson Auditorium

How do we know who people are? We listen to what they say, and we watch what they do. Josh will be preaching this fall on what Jesus said in his Beatitudes. This class will partner with that focus by looking to the other facet of Jesus’ identity — what he did. Specifically, we’ll study Jesus’ miracles and other actions described in John’s Gospel. Keith Hill and others will lead the study. All are welcome!

Intercession: Sundays at 9:30-10:15 in the Resource Room

Do you have a heart for prayer? This is an intentional time of praying for our service, our church, the various ministries and mission work we are engaged in and more. Steve and Barbi Partlow are leading this important work of prayer, come join us!

After Party Life Group: 7:00-8:30 on Sundays starting September 8

Keith and Sarah Hill will be leading a Life Group from 7:00-8:30 on Sundays in their home (or at St Giles if our numbers grow too big), using the “After Party” small group video curriculum. This curriculum is designed to help us understand how we might best serve the Lord in a politically charged environment, being true to our beliefs, but also able to maintain friendships with those who see political choices differently.

This Life Group will run for eight weeks, from September 8 until October 27. Usually the Hills lead their Life Group with a “y’all come” invitation to any who are interested. But this time they need to know if you hope to join in, so that they can determine whether to have the group at home or at church. All are welcome, but an approximate head count is important. Send Sarah or Keith an email at ks@webhills.net if you’d like to join in, or with inquiries.

The free video curriculum will be most advantageous for those who are willing to do about an hour of preparation each week. A description of the course can be found here: https://redeemingbabel.org/the-after-party/free-course/. There is a short video description here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T00t5aGe4FA.

Sanctuary Mondays at 3:00 pm led by Susan Herring

Tuesday Morning Bible Study

The Tuesday morning bible study of the Women's Fellowship will begin September 17th in the Common Grounds Room. We will gather at 9:30 AM for fellowship and start our study of Deuteronomy at 10:00 AM.

Marinate Life Group 1: 6:30-7:30 Wednesdays in the Adult Ed Room

Tom and Judy Roberts’ life group will discuss the Marinate questions from Sunday's sermon. It is a valuable time of discussing Scripture, growing in our faith, and in community. It is also a great opportunity to develop relationships. There is no homework, and all are welcome!

Marinate Life Group 2: 6:30-7:30 Wednesdays in the library

Pam and Gilpin Brown will be leading a life group in the library at 6:30 after the Wednesday night dinner. Our format is to check in at the beginning and then discuss the sermon using the Marinates. We will end with any prayer requests that members may have. We’d love to see you!

Practicing the Way: 6:30-7:30 Wednesdays in Common Grounds

Josh Modrzynski will be leading a life group through John Mark Comer’s “Practicing the Way” curriculum. This is a course from a great up-and-coming thinker on spiritual formation and discipleship. Each gathering will feature a short video, a discussion, a chance to pray for each other, and in some cases a spiritual discipline we will be practicing that week together.

Alpha: 6:30-7:30 Wednesdays in the History Room

Join us for the Alpha Course, led by George and Ginny Greene. In Alpha, we explore the foundations of faith and welcome all questions and discussion. All are welcome, feel free to invite a friend or neighbor!

Mom’s Bible Study: 9:15-10:30

Thursday mornings starting September 12

Whether you are a mom of littles, a mom navigating the college years or somewhere in between, you are invited to this 7-week bible study! We will be doing Kori De Leon’s study, “Upheld, Meeting our Trustworthy God Through Isaiah.” Come join us for a time of fellowship, discussion, encouragement, and prayer. Childcare is available as needed. Please let Rebecca know if you plan to attend: rebecca@stgiles.org

Discerning God’s Voice, 7:00 pm on 3rd Thursdays

Do you want to grow in hearing and discerning God’s voice? We are a life group that seeks to obey Paul’s words in 1 Cor 14:1, “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.” We meet once a month on the 3rd Thursday to intentionally listen in prayer and share words of knowledge, encouragement, or prophecy. Our first meeting is on Thursday, September 19th at 7:00 pm at the Roberts’ house. All are welcome, please let Rebecca know if you plan to join us: rebecca@stgiles.org

Church Life

New Art in Common Grounds

For the month of October Make Studio will be showing the art of Lora Monahan. There will be an excellent opportunity to engage the community and the artist at Oct. 10 Reception at 6PM. All are invited!

About Lora Monahan:

Lora Monahan is a figurative painter and art educator based in Richmond, Virginia. Her paintings explore bright, clean, color and contrasting values. They are often influenced by coastal life, nature and everyday objects. Oil is her preferred medium, although she occasionally works in acrylic or watercolor.

Lora’s work explores the contrast and irony in everyday life, often setting a mood or conveying a meaning, e.g., the solitude evoked by an empty chair in an open doorway or the untold story of a meal where light and shadow bounce off a coffee cup, saucer and spoon.
