SUBSTITUTE EDUCATORS DAY
American Education Week wraps up recognition of teachers and administrators by recognizing Substitute Educators Day. The event occurs the Friday before Thanksgiving each year and highlights the important role substitute teachers play in education.
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there were over 500,000 substitute teachers in 2020. These educators fill the shoes of the class's regular teacher for half a day up to several weeks. Substitutes apply to teach in a school district. They will receive notice from the district of an opening sometimes hours before they are needed. Other times, substitutes fill in for a teacher when they are scheduled to be away. A substitute often doesn't know which subject they may be teaching from one week to the next. They are flexible and resilient educators who provide a bridge between full-time educators and their students.
The observance aims to elevate the respect owed to substitute educators. It is also a way to advocate for substitutes at all levels of educations. The day also promotes being prepared for an absence at school and improving the receptiveness of substitute teachers.
Substitute teachers come from every facet of life with experience in math, science, language arts, history, business, and more. Focusing on the continued progress of a classroom's education, these teachers play a vital role in maintaining high levels of education in every school system.

Morning lows today dipped to the coldest we have seen in some eight months.
"The chilly weather is fully here! Morning temperatures were in the 30s and 40s across the Northshore. Southshore was mostly in the 50s," WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone said.
Wind chills had it feeling even colder.
Don't look for any temperatures in the 70s the next few days.
"Afternoon highs will remain below average and only in the low to then mid 60s into Saturday."
Malone says the coldest morning will be Saturday, with some frost in the region.
"Expect mid to upper 30s across the Northshore. This can support frost if winds are calm enough. Southshore won't need to worry about frost, but it'll be chilly in the 40s."
FRIDAY:
Sunny, chilly. Breezy. Low: S 48, N 38. Wind chill: 30s. High: 63.
SATURDAY:
Sunny, chilly. Some frost far north. Low: S 48, N 38. High: 67.
SUNDAY:
Mostly sunny. Warmer, slightly more humid. Becoming breezy. Low: S 53, N 45. High: 77.
MONDAY:

Trepidation /trep·i·da·tion/
Definition: A state of fear or anxiety about something that may happen.
Origin: Late Middle English, from Latin ‘trepidatio(n-)’, from ‘trepidare’ meaning ‘be agitated, alarmed’.
Example: She entered the dark, abandoned house with a sense of trepidation.
Trepidation refers to a feeling of fear or apprehension about something that may happen. It is a state of nervous anticipation, often characterized by feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. This could be related to an upcoming event, a decision to be made, or a situation that is perceived as potentially dangerous or threatening. For instance, starting a new job, making a public speech, or walking alone at night might all cause trepidation. It is a common human emotion and is often a response to perceived risk or danger.

At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!
The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.
We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals! The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay
Learn a little, drink a little, and have some fun with us!

NATIONAL CRANBERRY RELISH DAY
Another seasonal holiday staple graces the table each year and National Cranberry Relish Day makes sure you're prepared. On November 22nd make sure you're stocked and ready. Get tasting the many recipes out there and pick your favorite one!
Believed to have originated in the New England States during the early 1900s, cranberry relish is a traditional part of many families' Thanksgiving dinner.
Each Thanksgiving, Susan Stamberg provides National Public Radio listeners with her mother-in-law's recipe for cranberry relish sauce. The American radio journalist, an American radio journalist, and Special Correspondent for NPR and guest host for Weekend Edition Saturday has been doing this since 1971. What's unusual about the special recipe, known as Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish, is that horseradish is one of its principal ingredients. Craig Claiborne originally published the recipe in his food column in 1959.
Numerous cranberry relish recipes grace cookbooks and blogs across the internet. The bright and sweet flavors are enhanced by ingredients like apples, oranges, and pineapple. You can make them spicy or nutty, too. Or, you might offer more than one style and use the leftovers for great sandwiches. But there's more than one way to slice this cranberry dish.
- Use it as a marinade for pork, chicken, or beef.
- Add it to barbeque sauce and pour it over meatballs.
- Mix it into a batch of muffins for breakfast.
- Stir it into cream cheese and add it to your morning bagel.

Who knew a tiger could help sell cereal? Or that adding a smiley face to a juice pitcher would mark the inception of a cultural icon? Some brand mascots started as marketing experiments and evolved into household names, often becoming even more famous than the products they represent. Let’s dive into the origins of these anthropomorphized symbols and explore whether they were rooted in reality or purely imagined.
1Wendy
Credit: Brian J. Tromp
Wendy, the famous red-haired, pigtailed girl, was not entirely fictional: She was named after the founder’s daughter. Dave Thomas opened his new restaurant serving square burgers in 1969 and wanted a family-friendly image that conveyed warmth. To achieve that, he decided to use the name and likeness of his daughter Melinda Lou "Wendy" Thomas.
The original Wendy’s restaurant in Michigan featured pictures of the real girl, but this was not replicated anywhere else. Dave revealed years later that he regretted building the brand around his daughter, which, he felt, exposed her more than intended. Instead, Dave himself appeared in the brand’s commercials until his passing in 2002. After 2010, the real Wendy proudly took over that role.
2Kool-Aid Man
Credit: PublicDomainPictures
Originally, Kool-Aid ads in the 1950s featured a pitcher of Kool-Aid with a simple smiley face. Executives liked the concept, and as the brand evolved, they opted for a more dynamic, engaging character to connect with children—thus, Kool-Aid Man was born.
By the 1970s, Kool-Aid Man had taken on a fully anthropomorphic form: a big, round pitcher with limbs and a face. Known for his dramatic entrances and unforgettable catchphrase, "Oh yeah!," he would burst through walls to save the day and bring refreshment, becoming a hero to thirsty kids. He has since become a true pop culture figure, frequently cited online and in comedy TV shows like Family Guy.
3Betty Crocker
Credit: Taryn Elliott
Even though General Mills's Betty Crocker has never been a real person, she has ranked among America's most trusted figures for decades. In 1945, Fortune magazine named her the second most popular woman in America, right after Eleanor Roosevelt.
She was created by the Washburn-Crosby Company to personalize responses to customer inquiries about baking. This, in turn, helped make the brand appear more human and friendly. "Crocker" was a nod to William Crocker, a retired executive of the company. Over the years, a series of "portraits" were published to depict how she looked, which only fueled the belief of thousands who thought the famous cook was real.
4Ronald McDonald
Credit: Brett Jordan
Characteristic bright yellow-and-red colors and a wide grin: that is the trademark of the clown mascot of McDonald’s fast-food chain. He is probably one of the most recognizable mascots in the world. Ronald has remained McDonald's most iconic mascot since the 1960s, though the brand introduced other characters over the years, such as Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Birdie the Early Bird, all of whom populate the imaginary McDonaldland.
This clown was inspired by the success of a Washington, D.C.-based clown named "Bozo." Willard Scott, the actor behind Bozo, played the first Ronald McDonald, wearing an early version of the iconic costume, complete with a cup for a nose and a tray on his head.
5Colonel Sanders
Credit: Erik Mclean
Colonel Sanders has always been KFC's main mascot, though he’s been portrayed by different actors over the years, including Reba McEntire, George Hamilton, and the ironically named Norm Macdonald. Colonel Harland Sanders was a real person, born in 1890, who began selling his famous fried chicken from a roadside restaurant in Kentucky during the 1930s. Known for his white suit, black string tie, and goatee, Sanders established a look that would define KFC for generations.
After selling his company, he remained the face of KFC, making public appearances as "the Colonel." His image became iconic, and his smiling face is forever lit up in KFC restaurants around the world.
6Michelin Man
Credit: Laura Paredis
The Michelin Man is officially called Bibendum, or "Bib" for short. The name comes from the Latin phrase "Nunc est bibendum," meaning "Now is the time to drink." This was because the first ad featuring him showed an illustration of Bibendum holding a glass filled with nails, broken glass, and other sharp objects, with the slogan, "Michelin tires drink up obstacles."
Bibendum was born in 1894 when the founders of Michelin, noticed a stack of tires that resembled a human figure. Four years later, artist Marius Rossillon brought him to life in the first iconic poster. Back then, Bib was supposed to stand for the toughness and resilience of Michelin tires, but over the years, his look softened, and he took on a friendlier appearance, ditching the accessories he had been adorned with at first, like spectacles and a cigar.
7Mr. Clean
Credit: Anna Shvets
In the late 1950s, Procter & Gamble had an idea: Why not create a genie-like, powerful character to embody the toughness and reliability of cleaning products? Thus, the bald and muscular Mr. Clean was born.
Some say he was loosely modeled after a real-life U.S. Navy sailor, the walking image of strength, trustworthiness, and an impeccable cleaning standard. Whether true or not, Mr. Clean became a household name. Known as "Don Limpio" in Spanish-speaking countries and "Monsieur Propre" in France, his look has remained the same internationally.
8Captain Morgan
Credit: holdosi
The "Captain Morgan pose," with one leg propped up on a barrel, has become iconic and is often replicated by fans. Captain Morgan even launched a "Pose Off" challenge, inviting people to share their best Captain Morgan stance on social media.
Captain Morgan, from the eponymous rum brand, was inspired by Sir Henry Morgan, a real 17th-century Welsh privateer who became famous in the Caribbean for his exploits and later served as Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. The mascot’s swashbuckling design—complete with a tricorne hat, pirate attire, and the famous pose—invites drinkers to "Live Like the Captain."
9Juan Valdez
Credit: pariwat pannium
Juan Valdez is a coffee brand, but before that, he was a standalone symbol. The coffee farmer was the mascot for the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia. Introduced in the late 1950s, he was meant to personify the hard-working Colombian coffee farmers and distinguish Colombian coffee from other brands in the international market.
The point was to emphasize that all coffee under the Juan Valdez name was 100% Colombian and hand-picked. The character of Juan Valdez, with his traditional coffee farmer attire, mustache, and hat, was designed to reflect the authenticity and heritage of Colombian coffee. He is sometimes accompanied by his mule, Conchita, who helps him transport coffee beans.
10Tony the Tiger
Credit: Dorjan Frrokaj
Let’s wrap up with the one and only behind the famous slogan: "They’re grrreat!" Tony the Tiger is the mascot for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes cereal, one of the most beloved mascots in advertising. In the 1950s, Kellogg’s also experimented with a few other potential mascots for Frosted Flakes, including Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, and Newt the Gnu, but Tony was the clear fan favorite.
Tony was created in the 1950s by Leo Burnett advertising agency. He was designed to symbolize strength, athleticism, and positivity, encouraging parents to purchase what was marketed as the healthiest cereal for their children. His personality came to life when voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft (also known for singing You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch) gave Tony his iconic, deep voice and signature catchphrase.

In the 1890s, the Ouachita River was a vital lifeline for communities in northern Louisiana, including Monroe. Ferries like the one in this image were essential for transporting people, livestock, and goods across the river, long before bridges became widespread. This era saw Louisiana's waterways as bustling centers of commerce and community life, connecting rural settlements to larger trading hubs. For many local residents, ferries were not only a practical solution but also a place where people could gather, exchange news, and engage in daily social interactions.
The Ouachita River, stretching across Arkansas and Louisiana, has long been integral to the development of the region. Before railroads and highways reached rural Louisiana, rivers like the Ouachita were primary transportation routes. In Monroe, the ferry near the river’s banks offered a critical link across waters that were otherwise difficult to navigate due to the river’s strong currents and seasonal flooding. Ferries allowed farmers to transport their produce to nearby markets and supported the timber industry, which was booming at the time. Timber was floated downstream, with Monroe serving as a key location for processing lumber—a major economic driver in the area.
The 1890s in Monroe marked a period of change and growth. By then, steam-powered ferries were more common, gradually replacing manual or horse-powered alternatives. These steam ferries were faster and more reliable, enhancing connectivity and contributing to Monroe’s growth as a regional center. As railroads and roads expanded in the coming decades, ferries would eventually decline, yet they remain a nostalgic reminder of Louisiana's reliance on its rivers and the communities built around them.
This historical snapshot reflects a time when rivers, ferries, and human ingenuity shaped life and connected people along Louisiana’s vital waterways.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 25
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
