“Get Prepared for the Big One”
The current exhibit, "Our Community Prepares: Acts of Nature, Then and Now" at the Los Altos History Museum hosted a big earthquake preparedness educational event on January 11th, with sponsorship from the City’s  Los Altos PREPARES program . Over 400 people attended this event and learned what an earthquake felt like, what it was like to ride out a large earthquake, and how to prepare themselves, their families, their pets and their homes to be ready for a future earthquake. Thank you to everyone that came out! We know you are more prepared than you were before.
Engineering
Foothill Expressway Widening Project
County staff will be at the City of Los Altos council meeting on January 28th to provide an update on the project. The $4.9M construction project will widen Foothill Expressway between San Antonio Road and El Monte Avenue and include both operations and mobility improvements at both intersections. The City and County are working together to schedule a community outreach meeting on February 4th to help reintroduce this project into the community prior to construction. The design phase of the Foothill Widening Expressway project was funded in part by the City of Los Altos in efforts to help prioritize the project for construction as part of the 2016 Measures B Sales Tax program; the project is currently the No. 1 priority construction project in sales tax program.
Citywide Traffic Signal System Upgrade
The City is replacing the traffic signal controllers over the month of January. The old traffic signal controllers are 25+ years old. The new traffic signal controllers that include modern pedestrian and bicycle focused traffic signal timing features that staff is implementing as part of the deployments. For example, along San Antonio Road, residents will notice that pedestrians are released approximately 2-seconds ahead of concurrent traffic to help pedestrians enter the roadway ahead of vehicular traffic. Staff is also recalculating the amount of Pedestrian Walk and Flashing Don’t Walk time to comply with engineering standards.

This past Fall, the City also initiated deployment of a cellular traffic signal monitoring system that in combination with the new traffic signal controllers will allow the City to eventually introduce app-based bicycle detection features such as green extension for bicyclists that are approaching an intersection towards the end of green; completion of the cellular monitoring network equipment is pending along city intersections adjacent to Foothill Expressway.
