Peace & Freedom: The Long Journey toward Peace & Justice
The fall/winter 2017 issue of "Peace & Freedom" magazine is soon to appear. Watch your mail for the print issue, and let your friends know that the magazine is also available as a PDF on the WILPF US website
.
Much of the fall/winter 2017 issue covers the 33rd Triennial Congress, when members gathered in Chicago to remember, reclaim, and reimagine WILPF US's vision and mission:
- President Mary Hanson Harrison reminds readers of the "journey" WILPF US has been on and that peace, as Jane Addams described it, is "the unfolding of world-wide processes making for the nurture of human life."
- Patti Edwardson Naylor shares the challenges of farming "in an ecologically, socially, and economically equitable way" and what it means to "cultivate peace."
- Three presenters from Congress's Peace Activist Panel discuss their personal protest experiences and provide solutions to address root causes of war, dismantle the war system, and abolish nuclear weapons.
- Barbara Nielsen, on behalf of the Congress Resolutions Committee, summarizes the three resolutions unanimously approved at Congress.
- Darien De Lu and Laura Dewey report on the encouraging revival of the Leadership Institute, and Courteney Leinonen relates her experience with Congress's Beloved Community Workshop.
- Chicago activists discuss their work and some local Chicago history, with Larry Spivack speaking on unions and democracy, and Pam Smith writing about the work of the Addie Wyatt Center for
Nonviolence Training.
In other contributions:
- Nancy Price addresses the problem of our broken election system in "Reclaiming Elections 2018."
- Shipla Pandey offers some thoughts on building a global peace movement.
- Dawn Nelson reports on the 2017 UN Forum on Sustainable Development, and Patricia Hynes addresses the critical role female equality will play in a sustainable world.
- Karen Clark-Hoey writes about her branch's work with women and
children refugees in Western and Central Massachusetts, and Valentine Moghadam covers the Boston Branch's participation in recent antiwar rallies.
