Message from Candace

Dear Friends,

This year, we have launched two impactful campaigns. Our National Passenger Safety Week campaign recently wrapped up its fifth successful year, with over 60 organizations participating. Social media was abuzz all week with fantastic posts, reminding passengers of the essential methods and tactics to stay safe. Thank you to everyone involved—we look forward to next year’s campaign from January 24th to 30th!

We are also excited to announce the launch of our second campaign, Not an Accident, in partnership with Stop Drug Homicide. Many loved ones share the unfortunate label of "Accident" on their death certificates. You can read more about this important initiative below.

As we continue into the New Year, I wish you all safety and prosperity. If you are still make resolutions, please include a commitment to driving safely, focused, and sober throughout the year. If resolutions aren’t your thing, consider this a pledge to yourself—your loved ones will thank you for it.

Because I care . . .

I was shocked to discover that my daughter's death certificate labeled her death as an accident rather than a homicide when I received it last month. After a disheartening conversation with the National Medical Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), which is responsible for these determinations, a group of us decided to take action. We are committed to changing the classification from accident to homicide on our loved ones' death certificates. We’ve launched a petition, which you can find here. https://lnkd.in/eS5QngHY I urge all who agree with us to sign.

Additionally, we will soon introduce a bill in California that will allow family members to change this classification to homicide after the driver has been convicted. Medical examiners currently have five options for classifying deaths: Natural, Accident, Suicide, Homicide, or Undetermined.

When someone makes the conscious choice to drive dangerously and causes a death, it is no longer an accident. The same applies to drug dealers who knowingly provide lethal substances; when prosecuted for murder, those deaths should also be classified as homicides.

If you agree with our cause, please share your story here, https://lnkd.in/esCyvsmK our petition, and join our Not an Accident Facebook group.

If you represent an organization that would like to support us, you can sign up here. https://lnkd.in/e-3cvSbS

We need your help to achieve our vision for justice and accountability.

Thank you for standing with us.

Our Vision

A world where no preventable death is dismissed as an “accident.”

A justice system that tells the truth and acts on it.

A society that honors every victim with honesty, dignity, and change.

Because we have always cared . . .

Celebration of Life 🪽

Nicole Michelle Lee, a loving daughter; sister; aunt; cousin; granddaughter; friend; and mentor, was in a fatal car crash on Saturday, January 26, 2008. A 2007 graduate from Magruder High School in Derwood, MD and a freshman engineering major from Virginia Tech, she was an inspiration to so many as a leader, volunteer, and community member. She proved that a short life is not an incomplete life. The lives she touched will never be the same, and each day without her is a day where we will mourn our loss and remember our good fortune for having had her in our lives. She will be in our hearts forever, because to know Nicole Lee, was to love Nicole Lee.

She was killed by the 4th D, DROWSY DRIVING. It is just as dangerous and preventable as the others. Many people drive drowsy everyday without even realizing it’s potential dangers.

Jennifer, Nicole's sister.
