Mrs. Sagat Says...

Winter is Coming!

Happy Monday, and Happy Veterans Day. We are so thankful for all the veterans in our school community and beyond. This week we will be celebrating Veterans at our school Mass on Wednesday. Please consider joining us and inviting the Veterans in your life to join us as well!

We had some snow in the forecast this weekend and luckily we didn't get nearly as much as Kenosha County, but now is a great time to check that you have snow gear that fits so that you're ready to go. School policy dictates that students may NOT play in the snow without proper boots, snow pants, etc. so please get ready now so that students will be well-dressed and warm for when significant snowfall happens. Middle school parents, we know coats can sometimes be a struggle with this age group, but please be sure to send students dressed for the weather as we will go outside for recesses unless the temperatures fall below 0 degrees.

On a related note, this is how school closings work at St. Alphonsus: St. Alphonsus School follows Greendale Public Schools when closing for inclement weather. If for some reason Greendale Public Schools are not in session (ie, they have a scheduled vacation day while we do not), and there is inclement weather, St. Alphonsus will follow the Franklin School District. If both school districts are not in session, we will make the decision on our own. All announcements for such closings will be placed on local radio, television stations, and television news websites. Also, families will receive an email, text message, and voicemail message with closing information, and we will post to our social media channels and website as well. If school should be canceled, the hot lunch menu will be followed accordingly upon return to school (ie, the canceled day's lunch would be skipped).

Finally, a last weather-related reminder: Shorts season at St. Alphonsus is officially over!  Per our family handbook, shorts and skorts/dresses with bare legs can only be worn between April 1st and October 31st. Opaque tights & leggings under skirts and dresses are now required, and shorts for boys are no longer allowed. In addition, as the weather gets colder, please note that only plain knit slip-overs, sweater vests or cardigans in our uniform colors OR branded St. Alphonsus sweatshirts or pullovers with or without a hood purchased through the St. Alphonsus Catholic School approved spirit wear vendor are allowed. Hoodies are not allowed on Mass days during church.

If you have any questions about the dress code, please see our dress code page on the school website here, which has helpful visuals for what is and is not allowed on Mass days. In addition, you can also check out our Family Handbook here (the dress code can be found starting on page 29).

A couple of other reminders this week:

  • We do have a pizza lunch this week, coming up on Friday, November 14. Please remember that there is not hot lunch or milk served on this day, so if you did not order your child a pizza lunch you will need to send a cold lunch and beverage.

  • Conferences are coming up soon! Fall conferences are mandatory. Please find the sign-up links & more details below, and note that you will only be signing up for a conference with your child's homeroom teacher.

  • Tomorrow is our Dress Down Day fundraiser to benefit the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry. The minimum donation is $1, but please consider donating more as the food pantry is serving many more clients in need as of late. Thank you for helping us live out the virtue of Generosity!

  • There are lots of events coming up in December, and Home & School also has lots going on. Please be sure to check out details & save-the-dates for the Advent Wreath Blessing, Christmas Concert, Las Posadas, the Cookie Walk, and our annual Poinsettia Sale below!

The Stuffies also had a great time at the first annual Stuffy Sleepover this weekend! 35 stuffies joined us, and they learned to pray the Rosary with Father Kevin, visited the gym, the science lab, the art room, and the music room, and had some fun in the library & other classrooms too. Check out some of the cute pictures below! Each stuffy went home with a personalized album.

This newsletter is our number one communication tool to you as parents. We ask that you please read it thoroughly each week. Our school website is also a great resource for you and has lots of information available under the PARENTS tab at the top of the page. You can also always find an archive of our school newsletters on our website here.

Have a great week!

Best Regards,

Megan Sagat

November Virtue: Generosity

Dress Down in Support of the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry this Tuesday!

Our November virtue is generosity, so please join us in helping to support the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry this month! Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11, please bring a monetary donation (minimum of $1 per student) which will go directly to the Food Pantry here at St. Al's. All students who bring a minimum donation of $1 can be out of uniform on Tuesday!

The St. Alphonsus Food Pantry currently serves over 90 clients, and monetary donations are used for things like purchasing in bulk at discounted rates, procuring meat and fresh produce to include in the boxes, and more. To learn more about the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry, please click here. If you or someone you know is experiencing food insecurity, please call our Food Pantry phone line at 414-514-4400 for assistance.

New! St. Alphonsus Parent Directory

In conjunction with the St. Alphonsus Home & School Association, we are working on compiling a Parent Directory! This is a new annual publication that is a valuable communication tool for all St. Alphonsus families. It will contain an alphabetical listing (by grade) of all parents. It will include parent/guardian names, phone numbers and primary emails. Faculty, staff, and other important school contact information is also provided. Student names will not be listed

This information used to be widely available in the TADS/Educate system, but since moving to our new PowerSchool Student Information System, it is no longer available to families. We wish to provide this service so that you may easily facilitate birthday invitations, playdates, etc. as this type of information cannot be provided by your classroom teacher.

All parents will be included in the directory, unless you return this form by Friday, November 14. This form tells us that you do not wish your information to be published in the Parent Directory. If you do NOT return this form, your information will be included.

Calling all St. Alphonsus Girls! Come join Troop 13690 for an afternoon of fun at our Pajama Party!

The troop is working towards their Bronze Award and hoping to donate pajamas to foster kids in the Milwaukee area.

Girl Scout Troop 11412 Hosts Pet Food Drive!

Hi again! It’s Girl Scout Troop 11412!

This week we will be kickstarting our fundraiser to help add a pet section to the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry.

You can help us by…

  • Donating wet or dry cat and dog food
  • Donating treats
  • Donating money

We will collect food donations in their corresponding box outside of the school office, and money donations inside of the school office. Please consider donating anytime this week or next week. Your donations could help fix the problem of overcrowding animal shelters by helping keep pets at home.

On Friday, October 31st, around 47 cats were surrendered and brought into the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee. This is becoming more and more common. According to the Wisconsin Humane Society, being unable to afford care (food or medical) is one of the top reasons pets are surrendered. We really need your help! Thank you for your donations!
