Our Capital Campaign is gearing up! Camp Kawartha is working hard to raise funds in order to establish
Canada’s First Certified Living Building. Replacing our dining hall and kitchen, this new space will be a showpiece for what is possible in sustainable design. Like a flower, a living building enhances the environment it is situated on. It is designed to generate more energy than it uses, to create biodiversity, to be beautiful, to fully manage all of its water and waste on site, to be carbon neutral and to use non-toxic materials. Each of these sustainable aspects is defined as a “petal” – like those on a flower.
- Regenerative spaces that connect occupants to light, air, food, nature, and community.
- Self-sufficient and remain within the resource limits of their site.
- Healthy and beautiful.
- Living buildings give more than they take, creating a positive impact on the human and natural systems that interact with them.

Summer Camp Open House
Sunday, May 27th / 1:00 - 4:00pm / Camp Kawartha
|
Our
annual open house is an opportunity for potential campers and their parents to meet some of our staff, tour the Camp, see our facility upgrades, and get questions answered. For first time campers, it’s a chance to become familiar with our camp environment and address any hesitations or concerns.
This event takes place at our main site at
1010 Birchview Road, Douro-Dummer. We encourage you to carpool as parking is limited.
This year we would also like to invite all those interested in viewing
our new accessible features to join us during the open house. In the past couple of years we have built newly accessible cabins and climbing wall, and just last year constructed an accessible path right down to our waterfront. Come see the new opportunities available to our community.
The Gift Shop will also be open during this event. Purchase Camp clothing to show off your camp spirit, or pre-order care packages for delivery during your child’s Camp session! Visit
shop.campkawartha.ca to see what the Gift Shop has to offer.

“Both of our girls have been attending CK since they were old enough to be in Day Camp – they are now 13 and 11 and go for 3 and 2 week sessions respectively (they’d go for the whole summer if we’d let them). They are second generation CK campers and as far as our family is concerned there is no better summer camp!"

The Canoe Floated - Early!
|
In our last newsletter we announced our,
It’s Spring When the Canoe Floats contest.
Participants were to make their best guess as to when the Clear Lake ice receded enough to allow one of our canoes to float freely. The amazing prize for the lucky winner was a
Nature Camp stay for three nights and four days in August for a child between 8 and 12!
We anticipated that due to the thickness of the ice when we announced the contest that we would not be crowning anyone until sometime in early May! Surprise!! The ice is long gone, and the canoe is floating. That major windstorm that blew through Ontario caused so much wave action that the ice dissolved sooner than we thought.
The winner of our contest is Kathryn Petroff who has graciously offered to donate the space back to the camp for a child in our subsidy program to receive! Thank you Kathryn, you are making an amazing difference in a young child's life!

Our
Leadership Camps
Offer Opportunities to Build Life-long Skills
|
When you think ‘leadership’ do you ever wonder where those who lead get the confidence to do the job? Who do you admire as a leader? What skills do they have that make them effective and inspiring leaders?
At Camp Kawartha
we foster tomorrow’s leaders today. For us, leadership is about respecting one’s self, others and the environment; it’s about working to create a dedicated team; it’s about commitment, participation, trying, and embracing challenges; it’s about honouring and celebrating the successes of others and always demonstrating a positive attitude whether you are being watched or not. It’s about self-improvement and being the best person you can be and helping others to do the same.
Our dynamic Leader-in-Training (LIT) program offers youth a unique opportunity to build leadership skills that will help throughout their lives. We only have a couple of spaces left for the upcoming summer season.
Our LIT1 program in July is a 4-week session running from June 29
th to July 25th, and is open to youth aged 16 and 17. LIT2, offered in August runs from July 29
th to August 24
th.
LIT's will be exposed to a challenging environment that will accelerate important personal learning. Participants will become better leaders, work more effectively with their peers and demonstrate positive role modelling to our younger campers. They will learn how to set and achieve personal and group goals. They will learn ways in which they can care for and protect the environment. Participants enhance their knowledge of group dynamics, safety management, communication, decision-making, camper and self-evaluation, counseling and instructing. Led by our experienced LIT Director, candidates are supported, nurtured and motivated by experienced staff through workshops, programming and regular feedback culminating in a formal evaluation at the end of the session. Many of our graduates go on to work as staff at Camp Kawartha or other camps.
