Reservoir named to honor retired county manager

County officials gathered on Nov. 12 to celebrate the substantial completion of construction of Cobbs Creek Reservoir, now formally named the Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek.

Virgil R. Hazelett, Henrico’s county manager from 1992 to 2013, guided the project from conception and early planning. County leaders credit Hazelett for his dedication to the project even when other localities left the effort early in the process.

The Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek will be supplying water to the residents of Henrico for decades to come. It is also expected to open to the public in late 2025 for recreational activities.

Colder weather brings the beginning of water main break 'season'

A normal part of maintaining a water main system is addressing water main breaks, which commonly occur in the winter. This is due to the ground around the pipes shifting as it freezes and unfreezes. Public Utilities takes steps to reduce the number of breaks by renewing and replacing pipes. Crews will also provide bottled water and temporary water service whenever possible for impacted customers.

Watch this video to learn more about the emergency repair process, with footage from a recent break on Staples Mill Road.

If you notice any signs of a water main break, please report them to Public Utilities at 804-727-8700 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 804-501-5025 after hours.
