Update on Current Transportation Projects

James Slaughter Road and Hwy 55 Intersection Project: The project is in its final stages and scheduled for completion by the end of October. This project will improve traffic flow by widening eastbound turn lanes and enhancing pedestrian safety with a new 5-foot sidewalk along the north side of James Slaughter Road, connecting to Highway 55.

Jones Street Sidewalk: The project is on track for completion in early November, creating a safe pedestrian connection from northern Downtown Fuquay to N. Woodrow Street.

The Whitted Road Roundabout project is moving forward – storm drainage work is finished, and paving operations have begun! Please be aware that traffic patterns will be adjusted as construction progresses. The project remains on schedule for completion in May 2026.

NE Judd/Hwy 55 Intersection: The contractor has mobilized and is expected to be completed by March 2027.

S. Fuquay Ave. and Raleigh St.

Construction is underway at the intersection of S. Fuquay Avenue and Raleigh Street to convert it to a four-way stop. The project includes sidewalk and drainage improvements, along with ADA-accessible ramps and high-visibility crosswalks. The intersection is currently closed to all traffic and is expected to remain so through December.

EPA Public Comment Notice for Fuquay-Varina Conveyance Project

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invites the public to comment on its preliminary Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) that was published on October 6, 2025, for the Town of Fuquay-Varina’s Conveyance Line Project. The proposed action is one component of a larger project to bring drinking water from the City of Sanford’s Water Filtration Facility to the Town of Fuquay-Varina and the Town of Holly Springs. The project will be partially financed with EPA funding appropriated by Congress under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, Fiscal Year 2023 and 2024.

The EPA has prepared the FONSI based on its Environmental Assessment of the project pursuant to Section 102 of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 and the EPA’s NEPA procedures under 40 C.F.R. Part 6.203.

  • Environmental Assessment: The EPA completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) (EPA No. N2025405) for the Proposed Action and, based on the environmental impacts described in the EA (Enclosure 1), determined that no significant environmental impacts are anticipated from the issuance of the grant and the Proposed Action.
  • FONSI: The EPA has concluded that the environmental impacts of the proposed conveyance line project does not constitute a major Federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment, making the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) unnecessary.

The Preliminary FONSI, Environmental Assessment (EA), and related documents are available for public viewing on the EPA’s website.

The EPA is holding a 30-day public comment period from October 6, 2025, to November 6, 2025. The public may submit comments in writing to:
