Dear ;
I write to let you know of an event in
Kansas City this
Thursday, February 21. I hope you can attend, because the presentation brings together two of WILPF US's core issues: ending war and protecting our environment. Most recently, the presenter, Pat Elder, spoke on these topics on the
February 14 ONE WILPF Call.
Now you can hear Pat in person!
On
Thursday, Pat Elder will give a free talk:
"Countering Military Recruitment in Public Schools & Confronting Contamination Near Military Bases"
Thursday, February 21, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut, Kansas City, MO
For over 20 years, Pat Elder has been a key figure in the national movement to demilitarize U.S. schools. He continues to raise the alarm over expansion of the military in schools. (His book,
Military Recruiting in the United States, is a good introduction and can be ordered for $8.00 at
www.counter-recruit.org.)
Now Pat has turned his attention to deadly water contamination, caused by the military's use of extremely toxic and carcinogenic chemicals and their effect on human health. Informed by his many yeas of experience, Pat will discuss a new proposal for a legislative approach that parents and concerned citizens can organize to support. He has spoken recently at several peace conferences and written more than a dozen articles, posted to Truthout, Civilian Exposure and other outlets. He will specifically address the former Bannister Federal Complex in Kansas City.
Pat is now collaborating with the WILPF US Earth Democracy Issue Committee on this topic. From Kansas City, Pat will fly to Los Angeles to begin a cross-country tour,
February
23-March 1, to the eight military bases that have the highest amount of water sources contamination. Be sure to read his account of the tour in the WILPF US March eNews!
I just learned about this event, but I do hope you can attend this talk.
Pat is a passionate and expert speaker on these topics, so please also let your friends know of this opportunity.
Thank you,
Nancy Price
At-Large Board Member, WILPF US Board, and member-leader, WILPF US Earth Democracy Campaign and issue committee.
