Throughout the years, GWR has developed urban forestry projects planting more than 2,500 trees in the community, a youth leadership development program (Green Team) and urban greening projects including collaboration with Friends of the Richmond Greenway (FORG) in building Unity Park a $5 million dollar City of Richmond park.

Fact of the week:
When Did Earth Day start?
Earth Day has been an American tradition since the 1970's where people do something that benefits the environment. Earth Day emerged after a massive oil spill in Santa Barbra, CA that killed tens of thousands of birds, dolphins, seals, and sea lions. This fueled politicians and environmental activists to push for the National Environmental Policy Act, which led to the Environmental Rights Day conference that began what we now call Earth Day.

New Funding for Groundwork Richmond!
Groundwork Richmond was awarded a mini-grant from the City of Richmond's Love Your Block Program! We are partnering with 3 Beans on a Board, a community group that has shown dedication to ensuring the skate park at Nicholl Park remain a safe space for youth in Richmond.

We expect to be rolling this project out at the end of summer when we will have two events to educate the community about environmental stewardship, protect vandalized trees, and install a mural. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting project that Green Team will spearhead!
Upcoming Nicholl Park Event - Park Rx

The City of Richmond is hosting an event to highlight the importance of parks to our physical and mental health. Park Rx is a national day that promotes patient-doctor relationships and park utilization. This event seeks to improve community health and access to walkable, green spaces for all. This event will take place on Saturday April 30, from 10AM - 1PM.
Groundbreaking Projects
This month we are thrilled to share that we are finally breaking ground on a very exciting project, The Wellness Trail, that aims to connect key Richmond locations. The trail will provide pedestrian and bike lanes in addition to increasing the tree canopy in Richmond. The above image depicts a completed Wellness Trail. Below left pictured is a map of the project area and below right is the tree and plant palette. Groundwork Richmond will plant 62 trees before the end of April this year. Check out our next newsletter with before and after pictures or visit the trail off Marina Way South (between Cutting Blvd and Ohio St).
