Every so often, we are presented with opportunities to participate in life-changing acts of kindness. Such was my unique experience this past week, when I was privileged to donate a kidney to a "stranger" - a Jew I had never met - facilitated by the incredible Renewal organization.
I hope to speak and write about this remarkable odyssey in the future, and welcome any questions or conversations to discuss it further.
In truth, however, not every act of kindness needs to be so "dramatic." Sometimes, small, seemingly unnoticed gestures in fact can be life-changing for another person, not to mention for ourselves. The trick is, we never know which it will be!
Throughout the six weeks since October 7th, we have all witnessed, and engaged in, countless such acts - overt, mind-blowing bursts of generosity; but also humble and understated touches of concern and affection.
May we each respond to the "call of the moment" - through kindnesses massive or modest, public or private - continuing to produce more light in a darkened world.
With blessings,
Rabbi K
