Wolverines Water Polo Continues Their Winning Wave and Celebrate Seniors

The Bellevue High School Wolverines water polo team has been on an impressive winning streak, showcasing their skill, determination, and team spirit. This past week, they continued their dominance by securing victories against Interlake High School and Shorewood.

On Saturday October 19th, the Wolverines faced off against Interlake High School. The game was eagerly anticipated, as Interlake is a D1 team and would be a benchmark for Bellevue before state tournament play starts in a few weeks. Bellevue’s Varsity freshman players came out prepared, contributing significantly to the game’s outcome as they accounted for 7 goals and 8 assists, leading the Wolverines to a 15-12 victory over the Saints.

The match against Interlake showcased Bellevue’s strong defense and adaptability. Their ability to respond to the Saints’ size and maintain composure under pressure was crucial in securing the win. The contributions from the freshmen highlighted the promising future of Bellevue water polo.

Thursday’s game was a special occasion for Bellevue High School, as the team celebrated Senior Night. This event was dedicated to honoring the contributions and leadership of the team’s four seniors: Bobby, Sujaay, Jeremy, and Farhan. Over the past four years, these players have been instrumental in shaping the team’s success and cohesiveness. Their dedication and hard work have left an indelible mark on their teammates and coaches.

The Senior Night match against Shorewood was a thriller, filled with excitement and high stakes as Bellevue was trying to pull in closer to first place against Roosevelt for point differentiation for D2 East. Bellevue came out strong in the first quarter, quickly establishing a 4-1 lead. The early advantage was a testament to their preparation and determination to win, especially on a night dedicated to their senior players.

However, as the game progressed, Shorewood began to mount a comeback. The Thunderbirds’ resilience led to a lively fourth quarter, with both teams exchanging goals in rapid succession. The atmosphere was electric, with spectators on the edge of their seats, cheering for their respective teams. Despite the mounting pressure, the Wolverines managed to hold off Shorewood’s advances, securing a narrow 10-9 victory.

The victories against Interlake and Shorewood highlight Bellevue High School’s water polo team’s strengths and depth. The team’s ability to integrate new talent, like the freshman players, with the experience of their upper classmen, has been a key factor in their continued success. This blend of youth and experience creates a dynamic and adaptable team capable of facing any challenge.

Bellevue’s defensive strategies have also been a cornerstone of their recent victories. In both games, the Wolverines demonstrated their ability to anticipate their opponents’ moves, effectively block shots, and transition quickly from defense to offense.

As Bellevue High School’s water polo team continues its season, the recent victories against Interlake and Shorewood serve as a powerful reminder of their capabilities. The Wolverines have shown that they can compete at the highest level, and their winning streak is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

The team is focused on upcoming matches and the Division 2 State tournament. The Wolverines aim to leverage their experience, versatility, strong goalkeeping, and powerful offense to secure a top seed and advance to the Division 1 State tournament in mid-November.

The Wolverine Boys Tennis team concluded their final week of regular season competition with a win over Shorewood, a close loss to Newport, and a dominant showing in their 3A crossover match vs. Inglemoor.

On a sun-soaked yet cold, windy Monday, Bellevue made their way across the choppy waters of Lake Washington in their first ever trip to Shorewood High School, a team that produced 2024 state qualifiers in both singles and doubles. As the Mariners offense exploded at T-Mobile Park, Sophomore Andrew Chu and Freshman Keane Qu played smart yet aggressive doubles, taking out last years’ 6th place state finishers Riley Boyd and Eli Sheffield 6-1, 6-1. On point after point, Chu showed his athleticism and tenacity at the net. Freshman Daniel Pong continued his impressive first season with a composed, consistent 6-1, 6-3 win over Shorewood’s Drew Johnson. Senior Sahil Joshi showed tenacity and shot making alongside steady senior Caden Seuk in their first ever Varsity win together. After the match, the Wolverines were happy to get onto a warm bus and head home with a 5-2 win.

On Tuesday, the Wolverines introduced a brand-new lineup and modified strategy heading into the Kingco tournament. For the first time this year, veteran senior Rohin Bahl teamed up with senior phenom Collin Qu for a #1 doubles triumph over Scott Huang—a 2024 state runner-up—and Amit Hetamsaria 6-1, 6-4. The duo displayed power, chemistry, and camaraderie in a strong initial showing. Freshman Keane Qu flashed his dangerous yet consistent first serve in a fantastic 6-1, 6-0 win over Newport’s Justin Huang. Unfortunately, the Wolverines dropped the match 3-4. Fortunately, the Wolverines discovered a possible doubles powerhouse for the postseason.

On Wednesday, Bellevue hosted an important crossover match vs Inglemoor. The Wolverines swept the deep and tough Vikings at all ladder positions. Sophomore Jeffrey Lou, called up from JV for his first official #3 doubles match with sophomore Nathan Winget, took down Jackson Sliger and Aaryan Velu. After a close 6-4 win in the first set, the duo started playing confidently and aggressively at the net, winning the second set 6-3.

The Wolverines enter the postseason with a new strategy and high hopes. Kingco tournament competition starts Monday at 3:30 at Mercer Island High School—come out and support your Wolverines!

The BHS choir also invited musicians from Chinook as they performed the national anthem before the football game.
