Good morning,

As we celebrate Pride Month, we honor the courage and resilience of LGBTQ+ individuals who have paved the way for equality and acceptance. At Family Caregiver Alliance, we're committed to supporting all caregivers, recognizing that family comes in many forms—including friends, partners, and chosen community.

LGBTQ+ caregivers face unique challenges, and we're here to help. Our resources include specialized fact sheets addressing frequently asked questions, special concerns, and legal issues for LGBTQ+ caregivers. We also offer dedicated support groups and partner with local LGBTQ+-focused organizations to provide tailored classes, events, webinars and other programming. Please share this web page with your LGBTQ+ caregiver clients so they can check out offerings by FCA and our community partners.

We also offer trainings at no cost for providers wanting to provide culturally sensitive care and support. This free training—an online course that helps providers better support diverse caregivers including LGBTQ+ caregivers—is available anytime. And watch our calendar for future trainings focused on improving dementia care for the LGBTQ+ community (offered annually and via a limited number of by-request sessions).

Happy Pride Month! Please read on for this month's other FCA news, activities, and updates.

Thanks for all you do!

Warmly,

Family Caregiver Alliance

New Partnership Expands Online Support for Caregivers

Family Caregiver Alliance is happy to announce our renewed partnership with Smart Patients, an online peer-to-peer support community for patients and families. This collaboration connects caregivers with others facing similar challenges, providing a safe space to share experiences and learn from one another. The platform offers free access to discussions on health conditions, treatments, and caregiving resources, helping reduce the isolation many caregivers experience. Caregiver Retreat: A Day of Recovery

Caregivers often give so much, it’s easy for them to forget to care for themselves.

That’s why Family Caregiver Alliance recently teamed up with restorative retreat designer Wendy Figone to offer a one-day, in-person family caregiver retreat.

Hosted at Casita House in Moraga, the retreat on May 17, 2025 helped 28 caregivers reconnect with their bodies, minds and spirits—and find a moment of peace in the midst of their caregiving journeys.

The focus of the retreat was for caregivers to unwind for a day to build community with fellow caregivers, discover how self-compassion fuels self-care and engage in easy, joyful movement to enhance mobility and release stress hormones. Through embodied stress-release practices and guided nature experiences, the group gained practical tools to support peace-of-mind, foster resilience and promote holistic well-being.

Read a Q&A with Wendy based on an interview before the retreat. It aimed to spell out what participants could expect from the caregiver retreat, what they would gain and why taking time for ourselves is so important right now.

A Landmark Law Turns 60!

On July 14, 1965, Congress passed into law the Older Americans Act (OAA), a federal law that provides funding for social services and programs designed to support Americans aged 60 and older to live independently and with diginity in their homes and communities. The OAA established the Administration on Agiging (AoA), an office within the Administration for Community Living (ACL), and provides grants to states for community planning and social services, research, and training in the field of aging.

To mark the 60th birthday of this critical piece of legislation, local community organizations are celebrating next month! If you're in Contra Costa County, let your clients and patients know about the upcoming birthday party being hosted by Choice in Aging and community partners on Monday, July 14. And check out other events in Contra Costa and other local counties!

Smart Caregiving Series Addresses Young Caregivers

The latest installment in our Smart Caregiving Series addresses a caregiver question from an often-overlooked caregiver cohort: caregivers under 40. This caregiver asks: "I'm 20 and I'm taking care of grandma full-time. Is this normal? Are there other young people out there like me?"

This practical resource provides resources and guidance that address the unique challenges that younger caregivers face.
