NATIONAL CAKE DAY

On November 26th, National Cake Day delivers a scrumptious treat for everyone to enjoy! Slide over pie, this day cake takes center stage as the dessert of choice. On most birthdays, the cake is topped with candles no matter their age. Showers, weddings, retirements and anniversaries, cake serves up a slice or two. Add ice cream, and you have America's top favorite desserts in the same dish!

Whether it's a shapely bundt cake (celebrated on November 15) or the less curvaceous sheet cake, these sweet layered, frosting-covered, or fondant-decorated works of art scream celebration! Made from scratch, a box or picked up from the bakery, a cake sends a sweet message. They also come in many combinations and flavors, too.

No one can know how many. There are countless cake recipes. Some are even bread-like, others rich and elaborate, and many still are centuries old. Of Viking origin, the word cake is derived from Old Norse "kaka." At that time, a cake's texture was more like gingerbread due to the availability of refined ingredients.

Cakes typically contain a combination of flour, sugar, eggs, and butter or oil. Additionally, some variety of liquid, such as milk or water, creates a batter. A leavening agent such as yeast or baking powder helps the cake rise. Flavorful ingredients are often added, for example, chopped nuts, fresh, candied or dried fruit, fruit purees, or extracts. Though we commonly think of cake with frosting or icing, many cakes can be enjoyed with just fruit or other toppings.

Here are Ian McNulty's 8 picks for the best gumbo in New Orleans, from takeout to upscale

BY IAN MCNULTY

Chicken and andouille gumbo in the classic style at Brigtsen's Restaurant in New Orleans. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)

There is weather you feel in your bones and there is weather you feel in your appetite. In New Orleans, this means gumbo weather and the forecasts are giving us a taste of it at long last.

So, as tall boots and thick sweaters are being pulled from their long reverse-season hibernation, cravings are turning to the gumbo pot.

Louisiana people have strong opinions on the matter of gumbo, but the truth is there is no single greatest gumbo (well, except for your mother’s, of course, but we’re talking publicly available gumbo). There are different styles and each get to the heart of gumbo in their own ways.

That’s why I’m arranging my top gumbo picks today by category.

Creole gumbo

Creole gumbo is the most distinctly New Orleans of all gumbos. The keys are a mix of meat and seafood (“kitchen sink” style) and a roux that is substantial but still wet and slurp-able.

This style is enshrined at Li’l Dizzy’s Cafe (1500 Esplanade Ave., 504-569-8997), where the Baquet family gumbo is earthy-dark, restorative and teeming with ham hunks and sweet shrimp, hot sausage and quartered crabs. The satisfaction resonates deep and consistent. This is all packed to go these days, whether you dine in or not.

Chicken and andouille gumbo

This is spoon-sticking gumbo. It is right at home in New Orleans, but it will always take me to the Louisiana countryside, evoking the aroma of rural Cajun smokehouses puffing away and the smolder of cane fields being burned clear for the season.

The peak is the chicken and andouille version at Brigtsen's (723 Dante St., 504-861-7610). If there was a Pantone color for roux, this would be it. It's as burnished and brown as an aged whiskey barrel, and the flavor is just as layered.

Seafood gumbo

As Brigtsen’s shows, going upscale doesn't mean leaving down-home behind with gumbo.

Another example is my top seafood gumbo, found at Pêche Seafood Grill (800 Magazine St., 504-522-1744). It comes through in the roux, deeply flavored with oysters and shrimp steeped in the essence of crab and the flavor of bayou country.

One of a kind gumbo

Some gumbos have carved out their own niche, not through any flights of fancy from the template, but with distinctive style points that make them stand out.

That’s the gumbo the late Billy Gruber established as the house standard at Liuzza’s by the Track (1518 N. Lopez St., 504-943-8667). There’s deep flavor in its rusty-red, pepper-speckled roux, while sauteed shrimp is added just before service, keeping it firm and taut with a fresh pop.

In a 2006 interview with the Southern Foodways Alliance, Gruber credited this gumbo recipe to his mother’s family, who hailed from Chacahoula, a dot on the map on the edge of Terrebonne Parish swamps. That’s why we get a taste of this deep bayou country flavor in the city.

New gumbo (or new to you)

Willie Mae’s is famous for fried chicken. Its gumbo is new to the rotation but it deserves acclaim too.

Willie Mae’s NOLA (898 Baronne St., 504-354-8194) is the new, modern outpost from the family behind Willie Mae’s Scotch House (the Treme restaurant that is still closed from a fire, but is slated to return in 2025). This gumbo has long been in the repertoire of next-generation proprietor Kerry Seaton-Stewart, but only for catering and parties.

Now it’s on the expanded menu downtown, and it’s a beauty. The roux is hearty and peppery but still light, in the Creole gumbo style, all thick with crab and shrimp and dark, dense sausage.

Even when we have our favorite gumbos codified through years of devotion, a version like this coming along shows the rewards of playing the field too.

Gumbo to go

How about a gumbo that will fit (if barely) in your car cup holder? For gumbo on the go, and often slurped in the driver’s seat, I head to the hot bar at Orchid Seafood (1125 N. Broad St., 504-482-9092). You get a foam quart for just about $10 brimming with a light brown roux packed with shredded chicken, shrimp and sausage, turning gumbo into street food.

Gumbo to ship

Many restaurants started shipping their specialties during the pandemic, a survival tactic that has proven popular enough to last as things have gotten closer to "normal."

As a result, two very different gumbos from New Orleans landmark restaurants are available to order from anywhere in country.

Dooky Chase’s Restaurant ships its masterful Creole gumbo in two-quart portions, with a mix of crab, shrimp, chicken, sausage, ham and veal.

The Creole gumbo at Dooky Chase's Restaurant is a mix of seafood and different meats for a distinctly comforting flavor. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)

Commander’s Palace also ships its gumbos, both the seafood and the chicken and andouille versions (and its turtle soup, too), also in two-quart portions. Locally you can order and pick up frozen quarts of these gumbos at the Commander's Palace kid-sister cafe Le Petit Bleu next door.

National shipping (both restaurants use the service Goldbelly) can make these gumbos pricey propositions, at $90 each. But I can attest that when sent as gifts, these gumbos find gratitude when they land in areas bereft of this kind of flavor.

What does "lackadaisical" mean?

Enthusiastic

Energetic

Unenthusiastic

Active

lackadaisical /lak-uh-dey-zi-kuhl/

Definition: lacking enthusiasm or effort; lazy and careless

Origin: The word "lackadaisical" originated from the phrase "alack a day," which was a common expression of sorrow or regret in the 1700s. The phrase evolved into "lackadaisy" in the 1800s, meaning a person who is idle or lazy. The word "lackadaisical" eventually emerged in the late 1800s, combining "lackadaisy" and "lackadaisical" to mean lacking enthusiasm and effort.

Example: My boss was annoyed with my lackadaisical approach to the project, as I had not put in the necessary effort to complete it on time.

Unenthusiastic is a synonym for lackadaisical, and it means lacking energy or excitement. Both words describe a lack of enthusiasm or effort in someone's actions or behavior. Unenthusiastic can refer to someone who is not excited or passionate about something, while lackadaisical often implies a careless or lazy attitude. Both words can be used to describe someone who is not putting in enough effort or attention to a task. In short, unenthusiastic is a close synonym for lackadaisical, and they can be used interchangeably in many contexts.

LSU Women's Basketball

NASSAU, Bahamas – No. 7 LSU (7-0) trailed Washington (6-2) for nearly 35 minutes, but Kailyn Gilbert’s scooping, left-handed layup with a second left propelled the Tigers past the Huskies, 68-67, to give them a win in their first of two games at the Pink Flamingo Championship.

Washington led in the second half by as many as 12 and in the fourth quarter by as many as 6. LSU trailed Washington by one point and defensive pressure forced a dead-ball turnover, giving LSU 20 seconds to try to win after not holding the lead since early in the first quarter. Last-Tear Poa delivered an errant pass on the ensuing play to Flau’Jae Johnson who saved the ball from going into the backcourt for a violation. Johnson’s save made its way to Gilbert who got the loose ball on the right wing with roughly six seconds remaining. She sliced through the lane, gathering through two Washington defenders towards the left block. Her lefty layup spun around and stopped on the rim before dropping through the bucket with one second remaining. Washington called a timeout and Gilbert stole the ball on the inbound pass to prevent the Huskies from having a chance to win the game.

“That was not a clean possession where we could really get something and be settled,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “KG, loose ball on the floor, gets it with 6.1 seconds left and did what ballers do. You just duck your head and you go in there and make something happen.”

NC State defeated Southern on Monday to set up the Pink Flamingo Championship game. The Tigers and Wolfpack will face each other on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT in the championship game on FloCollege.

At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!

The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.

We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals!  The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

The Bluegrass Pickin' Party is an open acoustic bluegrass jam. Bring your guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bass, dobro, harmonica, or singing voice to join the jam circle. Beginners welcome to come and learn traditional bluegrass music. Intermediate and advanced players welcome as well. This weekly jam is also open to anyone and everyone who'd like to come listen and enjoy the music.

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.

Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.

No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.

This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.

The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.

Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.

Rolling fundraiser

Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.

With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.

Grinchy power lines and rain

The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.

Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.

The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
