NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS DAY
National Stress Awareness Day on the first Wednesday in November aims to identify and reduce the stress factors in your life.
Everyone has stress. Some stress is good for us. It helps us to respond to changes in life. Stress is our body's way of protecting itself from harm. However, too much stress causes harm to our health and relationships.
Identifying the stressors impacting our physical and mental health is important. Sometimes, health problems are the cause. But our health can also be affected by external stressors such as physical abuse, stressful work environments, financial stress, or other family health issues.
Once we identify the causes of stress in our lives, we can begin to eliminate or reduce stress. Some tools that help with stress include:
- Develop coping skills for anxiety.
- Identify and let go of the things you cannot change.
- Exercise to help us to let go of built-up anxiety.
- Eating a balanced diet fuels our bodies so we're able to better cope with the stress.

The modern equivalent of the word "forwhy" is "why". Both words are used to ask for the reason or cause of something. However, "forwhy" is an archaic term that is no longer commonly used in modern English. "Why" is the more common and accepted word in modern language. It is a concise and straightforward way to express the need for an explanation or justification. Whether in casual conversation or academic writing, "why" is the go-to word for those seeking to understand the reason behind a particular action or event. | | | |

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
- Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95 (German Ravioli in Broth)
- Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
- Riesenbrezel 10.00 (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
- Vesper Teller 14.50 (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
- Weisswurst 10.25 (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
- Wurstsalat 9.25 (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!
ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)
11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel 19.50 (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

Brass band Masterclasses in New Orleans (United States) organized by TREMPO (France)
In the heart of New Orleans, cradle of brass bands and jazz marching bands, this training aims to develop instrumental technique as well as knowledge of traditional repertoires and oral tradition.
We want to allow musicians who play in brass bands, and brass bands at a professional level, to deepen their knowledge of instruments, their techniques, and to work on repertoires of tradition and oral transmission. The discovery of this music in their social and cultural environment will promote understanding and integration of modes of composition and arrangement. This training takes place in the heart of the historic district at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, which allows them to meet many of its musicians.
Professional musicians practicing the music of brass bands and jazz marching bands in New Orleans styles and having an advanced level. Knowledge of repertoires and regular group practice (walks or concerts) are required.

Veal shanks
Veal shanks are the traditional meat for osso buco, and probably what you're familiar with seeing on restaurant menus. But the shank portion of several animals can benefit from this same preparation. You'll want to use shanks for this; otherwise it's not osso bucco.

The Garden District Book Shop is thrilled to announce French author Victor Dixen will be at the shop on November 6 to celebrate his Vampirya series books. As a two-time winner of the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire, Dixen stands at the forefront of French fantasy.
The series follows a fiery heroine, Jeanne Froidelac, who seeks vengeance against a royal court of deadly vampires in this epic alternate history set in lavish Versailles. Both books within the series, The Court of Shadows and The Court of Miracles, will be available in French and English translations.
Dixen will share insights into the world of Vampirya before opening up the floor for a Q&A. Afterward, Dixen will be available to mingle with guests and personalize copies of his books. The event is free and open to the public but interested parties are encouraged to reserve their copies. Reserve Your Copy
The Court of Shadows
Louis XIV transformed from the Sun King into the King of Shadows when he embraced immortality and became the world’s first vampire. For the last three centuries, he has been ruling the kingdom from the decadent Court of Shadows in Versailles, demanding the blood of his subjects to sate his nobles’ thirst and maintain their loyalty.
In the heart of rural France, commoner Jeanne Froidelac witnesses the king’s soldiers murder her family and learns of her parents’ role in a brewing rebellion involving the forbidden secrets of alchemy. To seek her revenge, Jeanne disguises herself as an aristocrat and enrolls in a prestigious school for aspiring courtiers. She soon finds herself at the doors of the palace of Versailles.
But Jeanne, of course, is no aristocrat. She dreams not of court but of blood. The blood of a king.

Video game company opens center in New Orleans
CityBusiness staff reports//November 5, 2024/
The Beach at the University of New Orleans has added another technology company, this time a corporate player in the video game industry.
DAQA, a provider of player-centric test programs and technology-driven quality solutions for the video game industry, has announced the opening of a quality assurance center at The Beach at UNO. The center will serve as DAQA’s network operations hub, play test lab, and primary site for quality assurance operations, focusing on secure console and live testing for a roster of over 25 clients. DAQA was founded in 2017 and provides comprehensive quality assurance solutions, player research, usability testing, and live quality operations support across major gaming platforms, including PC, console, VR, and mobile.
Initially, DAQA’s New Orleans center will create between 15 and 20 direct jobs, including roles in software development, senior testers, and game QA, with a commitment to hiring local talent from across Southeast Louisiana. As client demand grows, the company anticipates steady hiring to meet the needs of its expanding operations and a continued focus on fostering local talent and grooming future leaders from within.
“We are excited to open our first studio location and have chosen New Orleans to be our network operations center and play test lab,” said Devin Seto, Managing Partner at DAQA. “Evolving from a purely remote business, the new studio allows us to increase our product and service offerings. We are continuing to build our high-performance team, leveraging the incredible talent and passion for games quality that can be found throughout the Greater New Orleans area.”
DAQA first learned about the growth opportunities in New Orleans after attending one of GNO, Inc.’s annual Game Fête familiarization tours. GNO Inc. is the regional economic development nonprofit serving the 10-parish region of Southeast Louisiana that includes Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington parishes.
“The decision by DAQA to establish their quality assurance center in New Orleans is the culmination of multiple long-term efforts: the recent development of The Beach at UNO as a home to companies like DAQA; GNO, Inc.’s hosting of DAQA at GameFête conference; and, the on-going cultivation of the tech and creative community in Greater New Orleans, which has been ongoing over two decades,” said Michael Hecht, GNO, Inc. President and CEO. “DAQA is well-positioned to thrive at UNO, while helping to elevate New Orleans’ profile in the global gaming industry.”
The Beach at UNO, located at 2021 Lakeshore Drive and owned by the UNO Research & Technology Foundation, is a research and technology park community bringing together academia, government, and entrepreneurial endeavors.
“The location is integral to our mission of helping studios meet their game quality and player research needs, furthering our mission to be the concierge of quality for the games industry,” said Seto. “We are grateful to GNO Inc., the City of New Orleans, and Louisiana Economic Development for their hard work and support. We could not have done it without them.”

NATIONAL NACHOS DAY
On November 6th, National Nachos Day recognizes the snack favored at sporting events across the country. In their purest form, nachos are tortilla chips covered in nacho cheese, queso or other melted cheese and served with salsa.
Where Nachos Began
First created sometime around 1943, the popular and loved nachos are of Mexican origin.
History tells us that Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya created the original nachos in 1943. According to his son, Nacho was the maître d' at the El Moderno Restaurant in Piedras Negras. One evening after the kitchen staff had left, a group of U.S. Army wives stationed at Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass came into the restaurant. After a long day of shopping, they were hungry and asked for a snack.
Anaya prepared some tostadas cut into triangles. After topping them with shredded cheese and sliced jalapenos, he heated the dish in the oven. They were such a hit with the Army wives that they named the snack "Nacho's Special" before he could make another batch.
Word of the new creation quickly traveled. People from all over tried them, loved them, and over time, the name changed. Eventually, Nacho’s special became special nachos.
The original recipe is printed in the 1954 St. Anne’s Cookbook.
The popularity of the new dish spread swiftly throughout Texas and the Southwest. And since then, it has gained millions of fans across America.

We love nachos so much, we top them with all sorts of things. Sometimes we even go overboard. We call nachos with an abundance of toppings loaded nachos, super nachos, or nachos supreme. Serve them as a snack, an appetizer, or even prepared with extra ingredients as a full meal.
Since the time of the original nachos, the toppings have expanded. Today we add beef, chicken, and seafood along with a variety of seasonings. This snack even satisfies the pickiest eater. Whether you're a vegan, full-on carnivore or somewhere between, there's a nachos recipe for you.
When is National Tortilla Chip Day?
In restaurants across the country, nachos find their way onto the menus of other cuisines, too. Some restaurants substitute the chip with a potato base. Another option is to replace the toppings with ingredients from the culture. For example, to make Italian nachos top the chips with mozzarella cheese and Alfredo sauce. Asian nachos may include wasabi or curry. Each version of nachos brings its own unique flavor to the table.

City of New Orleans Hosts Third Set of Lincoln Beach Redevelopment Master Plan Public Meetings on Thursday, November 7
NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans, Office of Resilience and Sustainability, and the Lincoln Beach Redevelopment Master Plan Consultant team will host the third set of public engagement meetings in New Orleans East on Thursday, November 7, 2024.
Thursday’s meetings will display the preferred thirty programming elements previously identified through community input. Residents will be asked to prioritize their top five desired program elements within the budget for Phase One of the redevelopment and reopening of Lincoln Beach.
For the success of this redevelopment project, it is essential to have diverse participation and solicit valuable community input from all constituents throughout the City of New Orleans and its metro area.
What: Lincoln Beach Redevelopment Master Plan Public Milestone Meeting #3
Session #1: 8:30 A.M. – 10:30 A.M., Thursday, November 7, 2024
Session #2: 6:30 P.M. – 8 P.M., Thursday, November 7, 2024
Where: Franklin Avenue Baptist Church
8282 I-10 Service Rd, New Orleans, LA 70126
Language Access: In-person Spanish interpreters will be available.
Meeting participants are asked to pre-register for the community meetings by visiting https://LincolnBeach.nola.gov.
The same information will be covered during both events. Residents who cannot attend the in-person meeting may submit feedback via an online survey between Nov. 7 – Nov. 24, 2024. The online survey will be available at https://lincolnbeach.nola.gov.
The City reminds residents that Lincoln Beach is currently closed to the public due to the presence of alligators, venomous snakes and poisonous flora. Gathering at the beach is prohibited. In the nearly twenty years since Hurricane Katrina, residents have consistently voiced the importance of revitalizing Lincoln Beach in New Orleans East. In response to the community's plea and working with the congressional delegation, the City allocated $24.6M in 2023 to begin the engineering and master planning process.
Public Meetings 1 and 2 introduced and welcomed over 200 community members to the Lincoln Beach Redevelopment process. Those meetings were aspirational and helped to craft the project goals, guiding principles, and initial programming priorities. The findings from those public meetings, shaped by resident feedback, defined the programming, planning, design concepts, and the redevelopment strategy, demonstrating the significant influence of community input.

LSU football's matchup against Alabama on Nov. 9 will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on ABC, the Southeastern Conference
This will be the second consecutive game LSU will play on ABC in primetime.
LSU faced Alabama at the same time the past two seasons. Last seasons game was on CBS.
The Crimson Tide took down LSU 42-28 in Tuscaloosa a year ago after the Tigers upset Alabama in Baton Rouge in 2022, 32-31 in overtime.
Alabama leads the all-time series against LSU with a 56-27-5 record. It has won 13 of the past 15 head-to-head matchups.
The Tigers lost their second game of the year this past weekend to Texas A&M, falling 38-23 in College Station.
LSU held a 17-7 lead at halftime but three interceptions from redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the Aggies switching quarterbacks — replacing Conner Weigman with Marcel Reed — jolted a 31-6 run for Texas A&M in the second

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 11
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
