In today’s complex global economy, controlling construction material costs has become an uphill battle for builders, developers and policy-makers. A key reason lies in the U.S. construction industry’s reliance on imported materials — a dynamic that leaves domestic prices vulnerable to tariffs, trade disputes and supply chain disruptions.

Housing starts trend downward

The six-month trend in housing starts decreased 0.7 per cent in March, coming in at 235,316 units, reports Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The trend measure is a six-month moving average of the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of total housing starts for all areas in Canada.

The total monthly SAAR of housing starts for all areas in Canada decreased 3.3 per cent in March, landing at 214,155 units, compared to the 221,405 reported in February.

Purpose-built rental tower projects heat up as Toronto condo market stays cool

A 57-storey purpose-built rental (PBR) tower proposed in the heart of Toronto could be one of many rental highrises to come as the heated condo market cools but the urgent need for housing increases.

Near Dundas and University, the tower will feature more than 700 units and an 8,000 square foot park in a neighbourhood predominantly comprised of offices, hospitals and tall condos.
