Every September, we hold a little shindig to celebrate the tremendous contribution that volunteers make at The Food Chain. This year we got together on Thursday 19th September, hosted by our dear friends at the Duke of Wellington pub in Soho. Thanks to everyone who came along, to Olly, Cal and the team at the The Welly, and to the fabulous SuperGirly for entertaining the troops!
It's not an exaggeration to say that our charitable activities simply couldn't happen without volunteers. Every week they contribute an average of 70 hours, which in 2023 amounted to the equivalent of 2.5 full-time staff posts. They cook the lunches, make the teas, sweep the floors and peel endless potatoes. They take the photos, make the posters, post the social media. They speak 20 languages, carry countless qualifications and use their skills in ever-innovative ways to help us shape and then maintain our services as relevant, useful and effective. The hard work, dedication, enthusiasm and love that volunteers bring to our community will always be one of The Food Chain's biggest strengths.
This Christmas we'll be celebrating our 36th anniversary, and as a charity founded and built by volunteers we are proud that volunteers still play such a vital role in the community we have created together.
To quote one of our Service Users, “Life without volunteers is not worth living!"
