Through These Doors, You'll Find

the Stories of Texans

In early 2026, we'll open the doors to the new Institute of Texan Cultures. Inside, you'll find new ways of looking at people and culture, the common threads that tie our lives together, and the stories that identify us all as Texans. We look forward to welcoming you as you walk through these doors.

the New Exhibit Floor

What will you discover when the Institute of Texan Cultures reopens in early 2026? Perhaps a steamer trunk that carried a family’s hopes across the ocean, a guitar that brought Texas Blues to life, or a canoe carved from cottonwood that carried people along Texas rivers.

In Texas, Culture is Living

Park(ing) Day and Oktoberfest

Park(ing) Day - Sept. 19

Starting at 10 a.m.

The Institute of Texan Cultures will have a booth at Park(ing) Day. Our friends at Centro San Antonio will help us join a worldwide effort that transforms parking spaces into community gathering places. Spaces along Houston Street will be activated with creatives, designers, small businesses and downtown neighbors.

The ITC's booth will be right in front of our new home at Frost Tower, Section B - Houston Street, between Flores and Cameron. Our activity will draw on the upcoming MUMENTOUS exhibit and Texas Czech heritage, offering guests an opportunity to make mums inspired by the traditional Kroj dress.

Oktoberfest - Sept. 20

Starting at 11 a.m.

We're heading to Oktoberfest in La Villita, drawing on our collection of German artifacts and stories to share culture and traditions with festival goers.

We're bringing the German league bowling trophy and miniature bowling sets for kids to get a hands-on experience.

Get ready for a great day of music, food and entertainment. A toast to good times - Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkei!

At both events, we'll have details on the institute's current offerings and opportunities, and our re-opening at Frost Tower.

Ready to Serve:
ITC Docents Prepare for Work at Frost Tower Location

We are grateful for a fantastic group of people who choose to share their time with us. In the last week of August, we hosted our second volunteer training day as we prepare for the move to Frost Tower. The docents got to see renderings of the exhibit components, artifacts, artworks and major themes from the new exhibit floor. Excitement and anticipation are growing. We look forward to hosting the next docent meeting in our new location.

Question of the Month:

Where will the temporary
museum be located?

The ITC will be located at 111 W. Houston St, Suite 121, near the corner of Houston St. and Camaron St. The University of Texas at San Antonio has secured space on the first floor of Frost Tower that will serve as the museum’s temporary home for approximately five years. The location is easily accessible to visitors in downtown San Antonio and offers an engaging setting to host curated museum visits.
