Honoring Patrolman Albert Saccocia

On Sept 30 1966, Patrolman Albert Saccocia arrived to old Casa Loma Lounge on Route 106 East Bridgewater after the police were called to help handle a disturbance. He tragically suffered a fatal heart attack while trying to break up an altercation.

"He left a wife and three school age children. He is honored on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC and on the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial in Boston," wrote East Bridgewater resident Thomas Benvie, who is reaching out to the EB community to donate and help cover the $13,000 cost of a memorial marker at East Bridgewater's Town Hall to honor Patrolman Saccocia.

Patrolman Saccocia was very involved in the EB community. Beyond serving as an officer, he also helped found East Bridgewater Youth Football and East Bridgewater Little League.

Donations can be sent to a bank account at the Bluestone Bank, 29 Bedford St, East Bridgewater, MA 02333 c/o Thomas Benvie (acct #5465), through Venmo, or on gofundme.com/patrolman-albert-saccocia-memorial-fundraiser. The dedication of the Albert Saccocia Memorial will held be on Sat, May 17, 2025, 11:00a at the East Bridgewater Town Common.

"Hope to see everyone there for this long overdue event. Thank you so very much for any help you can give." ~ Thomas Benvie

HP Hood & Sons

HP Hood & Sons was a favorite spot in the 50's for families to go to celebrate special occasions or every day. Many EB townies remember the ice cream and greatest whipped cream cake around. It was especially fresh and delicious, since the former Parker Dairy land where Hood kept the cows was right across the street.  HP Hood purchased the dairy in 1942.

The YMCA purchased their side of the street in 1968.

Climate Can-Do: Preventing Food Waste at Home!

We waste food in our households daily without realizing how much. One-third of all food in the United States is left uneaten. Solving this easily preventable problem can reduce our environmental footprint and save us money!

1) Plan and prep weekly meals. Make a list of what you need and estimate how much you will eat. This will help prevent overshopping and save you money.

2) Know the proper way to store food. This helps it last longer and reduces food rot. Most vegetables, especially ones that wilt, such as lettuce, should be placed in the fridge's high-humidity drawer. Other fruits and vegetables that could rot should go in the low-humidity drawer. To help prevent mold, make sure to wait to wash your berries until you are ready to eat them.

3) When cooking and preparing meals, it is good to repurpose and use ingredients you already have or leftovers to make something new rather than buying more food or throwing leftovers away. A little imagination helps when repurposing some food that's past its prime: stale bread makes great croutons!

Taking these steps to prevent food waste can benefit you and our environment, so let's continue moving forward!
