What Is You Love Language?

Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. But what kind of love? We know Jesus was talking about agape love: sacrificial, selfless, and putting the needs of others ahead of our own. But did you know there are different kinds of agape love? To put it more simply, did you know there are different ways we give and receive love?

Our current worship series is about building healthy relationships with the help of scripture. In this 6 week series we will take the reality of messy relationships, from marital to friendship to parent/child relationships, and listen to what scripture has to say about making them stronger.

This Sunday we will be talking about different Love Languages, a concept made popular by Dr. Gary Chapman. Over the last 20 years he has described five different ways people give and receive love. I took the free test on the website and received my scores. You’ll find those out on Sunday. If you want to take your free test, although you do have to put your email and create a very quick account, you can find it on their website. https://5lovelanguages.com/. Knowing your love language, your partner’s, and the important people in your life will allow you to better express love to them and more faithfully live out Jesus’ greatest commandments.

Relationships are hard work, but they aren’t rocket science. With some intentionality and biblical grounding, we can be part of relationships that are healthy, vital, and growing. If you missed last Sunday you can go back on our website or Youtube channel to watch it. I hope you’ll join us this week and this entire month as we continue to learn what it takes to have healthy relationships in our lives.

Abide Nearer, Grow Stronger, Shine Brighter, Love Deeper, Transform Your World,

Pastor Chris

Being a Neighborhood Church

One of the greatest gifts God gives us is the opportunity to be part of a community. As followers of Christ, we are called not only to gather for worship, study, and fellowship, but also to engage with the neighborhoods where God has planted us. The church is never meant to be an island. Instead, we are called to be a visible expression of God's love and grace in the places where people live, work, learn, and play.

In the book Neighborhood Church, authors Krin Van Tatenhove and Rob Mueller remind us that thriving congregations are those that listen to their communities, build meaningful partnerships, and use their resources to help their neighborhoods flourish. Rather than asking, "How can we get people to come to us?" they encourage churches to ask, "How can we join in what God is already doing around us?"

I am grateful that this is a question our congregation has been considering and striving to answer for many years.

Through our partnerships with local organizations such as PiN Ministries, JCOC, Meals on Wheels, and other mission partners, we have sought to support ministries that are already making a difference in the lives of our neighbors. These relationships remind us that we do not have to do everything ourselves. Instead, we can join hands with others who share a commitment to serving the community and helping people thrive.

We also seek to view our building not simply as a place we maintain, but as a gift we share. Between the chess club, three different garden clubs, several recovery groups, multiple girl scout troops, and more groups than I have room to name here, our campus is filled with activity throughout the week. Community groups gather for learning, support, recreation, and fellowship as our church facilities become a hub for community life.

Each of these partnerships and shared uses of our space reflect an important truth: the church is not just the people who gather here on Sunday mornings. The church is also the relationships we build, the hospitality we extend, and the ways we participate in the well-being of our community.

This summer, we have an exciting opportunity to continue living into that calling through our Locals on the Lawn (LoL) events. Mark your calendars for June 26th, July 10th, July 24th, and August 14th as we gather for evenings of fun, connection, and community engagement.

This year, we are expanding LoL by inviting a variety of local organizations to join us. Our first event on June 26 will feature a fitness theme. Participants can enjoy line dancing led by FitPop, learn about Hopkito Karate and watch a demonstration, join a pop-up yoga session offered by the YMCA, and connect with representatives from the Virginia Beach Sports Center and Virginia Beach History Museums. All these groups will be at just our first of four events (and I didn’t even mention the ice cream truck yet)! These organizations, along with the others that will be present throughout the summer, help showcase the incredible resources and opportunities available right here in our community.

Locals on the Lawn is more than just a summer event. It is an opportunity to meet neighbors, strengthen relationships, support local organizations, and celebrate the many ways God is at work around us. I hope you will join us, invite a friend, and help us continue growing as a neighborhood church—one that listens, partners, welcomes, and serves for the sake of God's kingdom.

See you on the lawn later this month!

KGPC God Winks

Submitted by Emily Balke

Several weeks ago, Richard and I visited my brother and his wife at our mom’s old beach house. During the weekend we spent quite a bit of time remembering our mother, Helen Davies (Hathaway), who died in 2017. On the drive home a message came up on my car screen, “TEXT FROM HELEN DAVIES”. I was so shocked by the message; I didn’t know what to do. I eventually remembered that I had texted my niece, Helen Cosgrove-Davies, that morning and it must be her responding. I felt that my mother had reached out to me that day.

“God winks” are those coincidences we know aren’t coincidences. They are celebrations for what God is doing in us and through us.

If you’ve seen God at work in this church or in your life, write a short paragraph and send it to the church office (office@kgpc.org). Anonymous stories are accepted as well as those who don’t mind their name being known

Volunteering starts around 10 am, and should be done within an hour or hour and half depending on your route. We need people who are willing to drive anywhere in the city of the Virginia Beach.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to minister to our housebound neighbors by being a friendly face and bring them food that they cannot cook or collect for themselves.

Join us on June 7 at 5:00 PM at Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church for our first-ever Affirmative & Inclusive Service—a space created to celebrate, affirm, and welcome all.

At a time when conversations around diversity and belonging can feel especially heavy, this gathering offers a hopeful witness to the love and grace at the heart of our faith. Sponsored by PEVA’s Compassion, Peace & Justice Committee and faith leaders from across the presbytery, this service is an opportunity to come together in unity and encouragement—wear your Pride and be part of something meaningful.

UPDATE: The love offering will benefit the LGBT Life Center. The Center empowers LGBTQ communities and those affected by HIV. With locations in Norfolk and Hampton/Newport News, it provides vital health services, housing referrals, job assistance, food, and advocacy.

Serve is happy to unveil our 'Need Help Share' board in the Connection Point!

If you have an item (a microwave, a walker, a tool you need to borrow) or a service (a ride to an appointment, someone to feed your cat) that you need, please post your need on the board. And if you have something you can share, or a way you can help, post that.

Then, watch the board, and if you are able to help someone (or see someone that can help you), reach out to them!! What a beautiful way to love our neighbors and do life together!

MAY 2026 SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Session practiced the presence of God by reading Galatians 5:22-26 – The fruits of the spirit. We shared examples of how we have witnessed a Fruit of the Spirit here at KGPC which were many. God is truly at work in our midst!
  2. We will be participating in a Leadership Summit here at the church on Friday, June 5/Saturday, June 6 which will be attended by Session, staff and ministry team leaders. This is where we spend 6 hours deepening our connection with God, building on relationships with each other and hearing about the work our Ministry Teams are doing as well as our goals for the next year and how to implement them.
  3. The potholes in the parking lot have been filled in! Phase two of the parking lot project - re-striping the lines and handicap spaces will be done in the very near future by volunteers from our congregation.
  4. Board members of Trinity Preschool, Marion Mitchell and Susan Kerr, (who are also KGPC members) attended our Session meeting to give an annual report for Trinity. We learned that Trinity has been serving children and our community for 50 years! It was formerly Thalia Trinity Early Childhood School which was established in 1976 and came to KGPC in 2018. They started a new curriculum this year out of UVA which is the same program used by preschools in Virginia Beach. They have been increasing their enrollment meeting the needs of our community. We appreciate Trinity’s mission of our church and their outreach to our community!
  5. We got an update from the Pre-design committee. Meetings with the architect are ongoing and they are narrowing down the design direction. Also, a subgroup has been created to research, interview, receive quotes and make recommendations for a company to help with a Feasibility Study to determine the next steps.

Building Healthy Relationships

God created us to be in relationship with others. Those relationships include parents, children, partners, friends, church members, coworkers, neighbors, among others. To be human is to feel a strong emotional connection with another. But how do we build healthy relationships that will last? The Bible has a lot of advice about building life-giving relationships. Our Summer series will equip us with biblical principles we can use with the most meaningful and important relationships in our lives so they can grow stronger, healthier, and closer. With effort and intentionality, you can build a deep connection with your loved ones this summer.

June 7 Don’t Commit Relationship Overdraft Luke 6:31; Philippians 2:1-5

People express and receive love differently. Gary Chapman famously called them Love Languages. To speak another’s language fills up their Love Bank. To tear down or hurt them withdraws from their Love Bank. The goal is not the have an overdraft in the relationship. How can we achieve that goal? By following the advice of Paul to the Philippians church.

Reflection Questions: What are your love languages? What are the love languages of the important people in your life? What is the level in your Love Bank? What about those who are close to you? How might you raise their Love Bank level this week?

June 14 Fighting Fairly in Times of Conflict Colossians 3:12-15; Ephesians 4:25-32

Traditional wedding vows remind us that our relationships will go through sickness, for worse times, and will be poorer. We have no illusion that relationships will always be happily ever after with no problems. Conflicts are inevitable. Healthy relationships know how to fight fair in times of conflict. What does it mean to “fight fair”? What does scripture say about conflict? How might disagreements strengthen a relationship when both parties fight fairly?

Reflection Questions: What “unfair tactics” do you use during a time of conflict? Do you think conflict is healthy or unhealthy in a marriage? Why? Reflect on a previous disagreement you had in a relationship. What would you do differently if you had the chance?

June 21 The Miracle of Repentance - Preacher: Chris Andersen

June 28 The Crucible of Reconciliation - Preacher: Chris Andersen

July 5 Biblical Tools for Healthy Relationships Romans 12:9-21

The Bible has a lot to say about how to build healthy relationships with one another. In our last Sunday of this series, we will explore several of these biblical tools. Relationships may be hard, but they aren’t rocket science. Healthy long-lasting relationships take time, effort, and intentionality. Implementing the biblical advice Paul gives in Romans will help also.

Reflection Questions: Which of these tools are most used in your current relationships? Which ones would you like to develop more? What relationships in your life would you like to strengthen with these tools?

Flawed and Faithful Simon Peter

He was quick-tempered and impetuous, but possessed a passion that would change the world. He left everything to follow his teacher, yet struggled with doubt and fear. He was the first to profess Jesus as the Son of God, yet he later denied knowing him. Simon Peter is an ordinary fisherman who heard an extraordinary call. As we study Peter’s life in-depth from his call as a fisherman through his death. Perhaps we will see ourselves in Simon Peter, the flawed but ultimately faithful follower of Jesus Christ.
