When in your life did you know you wanted to work with children?
“I’ve known for as long as I can remember. When I was little, I used to pretend to be a teacher in front of my cousins. I would read to them, teach them, and help them learn. The feeling I had then is still something I carry with me today. It was always about making a difference in their lives, even in small ways.”
Did anything or anyone specifically motivate you to work with children with diverse needs?
“My motivation came when I first volunteered with children with diverse learning needs. They were some of the kindest, most resilient children I had ever met, and it struck me how much they needed a voice, a champion. I wanted to be that person for them, someone who would advocate for their needs, celebrate their uniqueness, and help them thrive.”
What is your favorite thing about working with children?
“There’s something so magical about the little stories they tell and the way their faces light up when they smile. I love being able to sing with them, laugh with them, and experience life through their eyes. It’s a gift to be part of their world and see the joy they bring.”
We just witnessed one of your students, Aria, learn to walk during her time at Pacekids. How does it feel to see a child make a major breakthrough like that?
“It fills me with such pride and emotion. Watching Aria take her first step was a moment I’ll never forget; it brought tears to my eyes. It’s a powerful reminder of why I do this work. I couldn't have done it alone, though. My amazing team put in so much effort, and together, we supported her every step of the way. When she showed us that she was ready to take the next step, it was like watching her conquer the world.”
Have you learned anything about yourself, or life in general, because of your job?
“Working with children has taught me to truly live in the moment and to embrace the smiles, the play, and the pure joy they bring. It’s a constant reminder that every day is a gift. At the end of the day, I want to know that every child has felt seen, safe, and loved. That’s what matters the most to me.”
If everyone in Calgary were listening to you all at once, what is one thing you would like them to know about children with diverse needs?
“I want people to understand that children with diverse needs are incredibly intelligent, strong, and resilient. They are so capable of achieving amazing things when we take the time to meet them where they are and truly understand them. Patience and empathy go a long way, and when we show these children that we believe in them, they can rise and exceed our expectations. They deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.”
