Satisfaction with Auto Insurance Claims Strained by Higher Deductibles, More Total Losses

Auto insurance rates are finally easing after the record highs of 2024, but customers are still feeling the impact of years of steep costs. The J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study shows overall satisfaction with the claims process holding nearly flat at 700 out of 1,000, just three points higher than last year. Many drivers are cutting costs by raising deductibles, dropping coverage, or avoiding claims altogether. Now, 26% carry deductibles of $1,000 or more, and 7% have skipped filing a claim to avoid higher rates. Although insurers are filing for rate decreases, 44% of customers with a claim still saw premium increases in the past year, which dragged down satisfaction levels.

Repair times, however, have improved to an average of 19.3 days from 22.3, boosting satisfaction for repairable claims, though cars with advanced driver assistance systems still take longer to fix. Claim severity continues to rise, with total losses now making up 27% of all claims, while smaller claims are declining. Erie Insurance ranks highest in satisfaction with a score of 743, followed by NJM Insurance Co. (731) and Liberty Mutual (730). Overall, while rate relief is slowly arriving, most policyholders have yet to feel it, keeping satisfaction largely unchanged.

U.S. National Debt Hits $38 Trillion, Driving Mortgage Rates Higher

The U.S. government shutdown and rising national debt, now over $38 trillion, are driving higher borrowing costs, keeping mortgage rates around 6–6.5% through 2028. Experts say rates are unlikely to return to the historically low 3–4% levels, and turbulence in the bond market could push them even higher in the near term. This trend is expected to affect housing affordability, inflation, and development for years to come.

Long-term projections suggest the national debt could push 10-year Treasury yields higher, potentially resulting in mortgage rates near 7.5% by 2054. Homebuyers are advised to improve credit scores and shop around to secure the best rates, while homeowners with significant equity may consider using a HELOC to access value, as interest rates are expected to remain elevated.

The U.S. Saw Record $101 Billion in Weather Losses Through June

The U.S. experienced a record $101 billion in losses from severe storms and fires in the first half of 2025, driven largely by California wildfires and spring tornadoes in the central and southern states. Experts link the increase to climate change and greater exposure, while federal relief funds remain limited and some disaster aid requests are delayed.
